Movies about USNA or Navy

1. Top Gun
2. Top Gun
3. Top Gun

I have no idea if it is accurate... but I do know it is awesome. I’d imagine that it is also unintentionally the greatest recruitment tool the US Navy has ever seen.

Run Silent, Run Deep and Das Boot are my two favorite submarine movies.

The Enemy Below is a good one for tension and drama, but not quite in the same league as the other two.

Das Boot...in the original German with subtitles, is certainly one of the greatest war time movies ever made. There are some that argue it is the greatest and if you haven't seen it, let's just say riveting and realistic is a gross understatement in describing this incredible film.

The dubbed version of Das Boot is indeed an abomination. That movie needs to be seen in German, with subtitles.

The cool thing about Run Silent, Run Deep is that the set was built exactly to the cramped specifications of an actual Balao class submarine.
Conversely, the U-boat set in The Enemy Below was vastly larger than an actual U-boat.

Not sure if this link is allowed, and while it’s not USNA, it looks amazing!!

For the most realistic film about day-to-day life in the USN I would recommend Battleship. Totally accurate.

Bwaaaa Haaa Haaa. Entertaining movie, nonetheless. :)

Nagata: I can't believe that worked!
Hopper: Yeah, Art of War. "Fight the enemy where they aren't." After all these years, it finally just clicked.
Nagata: But that's not what it means.
Hopper: Really?
Nagata: Not even close.

I’ve heard (not sure if it’s true) from a friend who is applying to USNA 2025 that USNA is expecting a noticeable increase in the number of applications after the release of Top Gun 2 this year. Crazy to think about how Hollywood can alter someone’s aspirations that easily.

Top Gun 2 isn't coming out till 2020 unfortunately.

Which is perfect timing for 2025 class.

I know you jest but still a very entertaining flick. Army Colonel Greg Gadson who played the double amputee, well he wasn’t playing as he really is a double amputee, has two kids who were in the school in which I taught at that time. His son was on the football team when I coached there. Great family.

Nobody has told the admissions team about an anticipated increase so I wonder who the "USNA" in this comment is. . . (the Company XX's third class midshimen). . . (Lt Smith's fourth period Calculus class). . . (YP682's Plebe crewmembers) ???? Or was it the administration.

^^^

I recall someone official years ago noting there was an increase in applications following Top Gun. They'd actually charted it. Whether it was cause and effect is another matter.
