MS Nominations

Things change each year but based on the individuals in this Post getting multiple nominations to multiple academies tells me that MS is not that competitive. Really Competitive districts and states do not give multiple nominations to different academies. In Texas, it is impossible to get more than one nomination from a Senator. They get between 750-1000 applications each year. They coordinate and do not nominate the same kids.

DS received nominations from Senators Wicker and Cochran and Representative Palazzo to USNA and Representative Palazzo to USAFA. To my knowledge, other than recruited athletes, Rex received the only appointment to the USNA from the 4th Congressional District (which he evidently turned down in favor of the USAFA).

Hi, Im looking to apply to the service academy next year. Does anyone know how many people apply for a service academy nomination in MS? Do you believe MS is highly competitive when trying to acquire a nomination? Does anyone know how hard it is to receive one from Harper"s office?

I cannot give you an exact number of how many apply for nomination in MS, but I can tell you it is a lot less than other states. I know that there was around 30 combined who applied for a nomination for any of the 4 service academies for Congressman Palazzo. It is competitive, but it is not near as competitive as other states (like California or some of the Northeastern states) can be.

Thank you so much for the response!! I just recently moved to MS (6 months ago) and I was a little worried about the nominations because I didn't know if MS was as competitive as Texas or Virginia.

Get in touch with both Senators office and Congressmen Harpers (assuming that's your district) office ASAP. They all three have people that take care of Service Academy nominations. Steve Guyton is the main guy you need to contact. He is the "Yoda" for information on how to get nominated. I'm not sure which politician he works for, but they all listen to him when it comes to the Service Academies. Find out when and where the "Academy Days" are around the state and go to them, even if it's a Congressmen not in your district hosting it. You can bet Steve Guyton will be there, and the more you talk to him and he sees your face the better.

My DS attended Summer Seminar last week and came home convinced he wants to attend the USNA. Wondering what act scores, gap, class ranks have been required to receive nomination. We live in the Representative Kelly's district. Thanks.

Probably should read this recent thread on a similar topic about NOM's.

https://www.serviceacademyforums.co...cal-representative-senator-or-governor.56348/

Getting a NOM is NOT about who you know or how many times you get to rub elbows with people associated with your MOC.
Thanks for your response, but I never implied that I thought it was. Was specifically asking what act, gpa , class ranks, etc had been required to receive a NOM in MS since everyone talks about it varying from state to state, district to district.

But some of the replies on both threads have implied that various forms of "rubbing elbows" is part of the process which is incorrect. The same criteria applies across the entire country with regard to being 3Q and is determined by the SA. Others seem to confuse that with getting a NOM where each MOC determines their own criteria which may/may not be weighted toward those things you mentioned.

Questions similar to yours are frequently asked and it is best to assume every area of the country is competitive since: 1) your parents are unlikely to relocate just to improve your chance for a NOM and 2) you have no idea from year to year who the other candidates are who may be applying and 3) you are probably not going to decide to apply/not apply based on whatever those numbers might be.

There are many variables to the questions you asked. There are no "magic" numbers to any of the categories used to determine who receives nominations. The best thing to do is make sure your DS is "well rounded". Some good reference numbers are: 30 in each ACT category, top 10% class rank, and high 3 GPA with AP classes. He needs to be involved in some type of athletics (the more the better), and as many leadership activities as possible.

And he absolutely needs to "rub elbows" with his MOC's and the MOC's reps. They want to know your DS is serious about the academy. Attending academy days and staying in touch with them show his genuine interest. I will repeat what I said in an earlier post; seek out Steve Guyton. He is the most active person in the state of Mississippi when it comes to Academy Nominations.
Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.
