My son is interested in wrestling & lacrosse. Is It possible to participate in both at USMMA? Thank you for any info.

I am pretty sure it would not be possible to play multiple varsity sports at USMMA. The reason is that your sea year dates are organized around your sport. You cannot be at sea for 4 months 3rd class year and 8 months 2nd class year and play two sports. My DD played two sports her plebe year, but had to give one up for 3rd class and 2nd class years. Not to mention the time it takes away from studying to play a sport. If my DD had to do it over again, she says she would have only played one sport. USMMA is apparently going to transition back to the quarter system (from the current trimester system) in the next couple of years. So your sea year would be divided into halves between 3rd class and 2nd class years. Two sports would still not be compatible with sea year. My advice would be to pick your favorite sport and concentrate on that one only.

Thank you, this is very helpful.

Helpful, but incorrect.

Several people play multiple varsity sports at KP. I know several women who played volleyball and basketball. There’s even a senior athletic award given to one soccer and one baseball player named after Kenny Graff who was a soccer and baseball player.

The sea year does throw some wrenches into scheduling, but if you are good enough to play it will work out if one is flexible.

Wrong. Wrestling and LAX are both "B Split" sports. Students who play wrestling and LAX are either at sea or at school together throughout their 4 years. It is logistically possible, I know they take Men's LAX very serious at the academy, long practices etc. Wrestling seemed less serious. It's might be possible, but it'll seriously cut into your time.

Okay, I concede it is possible, but I maintain it is still not advisable to try to do two sports. Let me add that I know something about this subject, possibly more than even Mr2020 (who we all know knows everything about everything.) I was a two sport Division I college athlete myself. Although I was an All-American in my best sport and a four-year starter in my second, teammates and coaches on both teams resented me. My DD at USMMA experienced some of the same issues while trying to play two sports her plebe year. In my case, my seasons overlapped, and I had to deal with the stress of constantly disappointing one team or another by missing practices and/or games. I did strength training daily from 6am to 7am, practiced one sport from 3pm to 6pm and the other from 7pm to 10pm. It was grueling. If I had to do it again, I definitely would have only done a single sport. Now Division III may be different than my Division I experience, but when you add in the required regimental duties and heavy course load at USMMA, I remain convinced that trying to play two sports would be a mistake.

I would argue to let the person who is good enough to get accepted to the Academy try and then make the decision based on their own experience. There is minimal to lose from trying and a whole lot of “I wish I had tried” if one never does.

D3 athletics is, in many respects, a whole different beast than D1.

A mistake for someone who isn't good at time management and prioritizing tasks. Lots of people played two sports. Most often those people are aggressive and have excellent time management making great grades as well. Knowing you have less time leaves less time to procrastinate. I know lots of people with good high school educations thought plebe year was a breeze. The only course I ever struggled with at all was Physics 2, where it took failing the first two exams to make me get the message and study before passing the last 2 and final with A's for an overall B grade in the class. Try it out and see if you can handle it.

Any tips on the athletic recruitment process?
campus visit? Coach contact? Current athlete advice?

In D3 sports where the recruiting budget nears zero the best thing to do is reach out to the coach. If your sport lends to video tapes, send them your tapes and info. If it’s more of a time-based sport (eg track, swim) send them your info and times.
