Multitool/knife for beast

I’ve carried a Leatherman almost everyday since Buckner in early 90’s. I personally carry a Wave today (actually own two for those times I misplace one for awhile); but just bought DD a Skeletool this past weekend. It’s a lot lighter and the tools you’re giving up aren’t used that much. I figured for her build, saving weight was more important then rarely used tools.

I got my plebe the Leatherman Wave for $75 after 20% off last year with free engraved and leather pouch. He likes it very much especially the scissors came in very handy!

So it seems like the Wingman and the Wave are the most popular. Are the extra tools like the saw and the straight edged blade on the wave useful or necessary for Beast or are the blade and scissors sufficient on the Wingman?

DS took a MUT, and while it lasted he loved it. Sadly, during Beast, he left it out once while he stepped away from his barracks for a minute and when he returned, it was gone, has not seen it since. He did replace it with another MUT though, thinks it is a great tool.

I like this message, and my takeaway...............don't buy the Mercedes for Beast. Get the Cadet Candidate one, but there is a lot going on at Beast; the NC's are under a great deal of stress, and keeping track of stuff is not necessarily high on the priority list..........I would guess that the mud of Buckner is littered with multi-tools!! Congrats to your CC! Good luck

... and now, the rest of the story ...
DS loses MUT #1 during Beast. It had his name engraved on it. He liked it, got a 2nd one. Between Plebe and Yuk years, corps scrambled (all new org). Years go by. While he was a firstie, one day he spies his original MUT in his new companies Day Room. Someone knew where to find him yet didn't return it to him directly. Name is still on it, now it's broken. Sends it back to Leatherman, they rebuild it like new. Now, with two MUTs, he carries MUT #1 everywhere. Still works like a champ.

I am looking for a watch for my DS during his Beast training. What I heard is that it should have alarm and BASIC functions permissible by the rules. Like it cannot have mapping or calculator functions etc). What are the recommended watches?

The cheapest black colored Casio G Shock would do just fine. He might lose it or break it. Nonetheless it's no big deal. A fancier one can be a gift later down the road.

As far as the watches go, I purchased an Ironman classic. Has the alarm function and was 35 bucks on Amazon. I plan on using my Garmin during during the academic year, so for me there was no reason to spend a lot on a basic watch.

New MUT was indeed visibly engraved -- working good so far. And while you cannot carry it with you on the plane, you can also declare it and check it in with checked baggage to avoid the mailing issue (if you trust TSA  -- a separate issue there).
I check my pocket knives and have never had to declare. Maybe I should check TSA rules more carefully. I always declare when traveling with pistol.

About beast, but more about what parents should NOT take home from Beast, due to TSA. At least a few years ago. RDay 2011 was my wife’s first visit to USMA. As a way to remember her visit we bought a letter opener which was a small replica of the cadet saber, very nice looking, at the gift shop. TSA in Newark said it was a dagger and refused to either allow us to check it in luggage or in carry on or even go find a shipper to ship it (not sure how they could have prevented that I’m just guessing there isn’t a mailbox service store in Newark airport). One letter opener and a unique memory lost. Found a similar one later, but it just wasn’t the same memory. TSA. Hard to predict sometimes. YMMV

In the "Cadet Basic Training (CBT) Packing List - Annex E (Prohibited Items)" it lists "Knives over 4 inches" & "Weapons of any kind" as a prohibted items.

Question #1) When they say over four inches do they mean just the blade or do they mean the whole knife. I'm pretty sure they mean just the blade, but confirmation would be great because.......

Question #2) It would be terrible if DS showed up with his trusty SOG tactical folding knife with its 3.5" spring assisted opening tanto blade, only to find out that he's in big trouble for bringing an 8" knife-weapon to BEAST Barracks.

I know it reads like an overkill type of knife but it's really not. It's the same pocket-knife he used all through Boy Scouts.

Thanks.

You may wish to check on the issue of declaring a knife when in checked airline baggage. I do not believe that it is required I put a knife in my checked baggage routinely. Guns are on other matter, but knives, no requirement to declare in checked baggage.
A different result MAY occur if your destination is a foreign country. In that case foreign laws will apply st destination and you will need to find the rules for that country.
Good luck and safe
