My chances at an appointment

Hi, I’ve been surfing the forums for a few weeks now but have just gotten around to actually making an account, and I have one aching question: what are my chances?

Some stuff about me: I am an Illinois resident (IL-11) however, I currently live overseas in Belgium. I am a senior and attend an American DoDDS school, and I’m heavily involved in extracurriculars. This spring will be my 6th season of track and field, and in the fall I completed my second season of cross country, serving as captain and competing at the European championships. I am the president of the Model UN club at my school, and I’m a member of Student 2 Student, a program that helps integrate new students to the school as new kids are always coming and going. I am a member of my JROTC corps’ drill team and I command the armed regulation team. We are the reigning European champions 6 years running and we’re hoping for number 7 this spring. I have served as flight commander and attended cadet leadership course twice, the second time as a flight commander. I am nkw the director of operations in my corps, the third highest position, only lower than the deputy and corps commander. I am also a member of my schools marksmanship team. I also do debate, although not at a competitive level, it’s just a small lunchtime club my friends and I created.

Academically, I have a 1300 SAT and a 3.4 GPA. Ive known from the get-go that my gpa is lower than what the academy wants, but my SAT score is about at the average, and I’m hoping my extracurriculars can help outweigh my GPA. I had what one might call a “rough” junior year, but I enjoy school and I enjoy taking challenging classes. This year I’m in 4 APs, last year I was in 2, and sophomore year I was in one.

I passed my CFA and DoDMERB without incident.

In December I received a principal nomination to USAFA from my congressman. I’ve read about every thread there is on principal noms, so to my understanding it just about guarantees me an appointment SO LONG AS all my other scores meet “basic criteria.”

In conclusion, I think in terms of extracurriculars I’m doing great, but academically I’m a little worried. Does my GPA specifically meet “basic criteria?” I’ve heard of people getting accepted with lower GPA’s...

I’m a nobody also, but you’ve surely read this forum enough to know that we can’t project your chances with any dependable accuracy. That said, as a principal nominee, your chances are indeed very good if you are 3Q. We’re deep into the process now and you’ve done all you can. So try not to stress about this — it’s out of your control — and go enjoy your senior year.

First off, I like the profile picture. And secondly yeah I’ve seen all the posts similar to mine and I’ve seen all the answers similar to yours in that the only people who really know how the process works is the admissions staff, but I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask out. I appreciate your answer though, it’s essentially what I’ve been thinking but I wanted to make sure it wasn’t just me.

Your SAT scores and GPA could have been better but the fact of the matter is that they aren’t going to change now and they don’t define you as a leader. What you have done for your school and JROTC unit is outstanding because you have proven yourself as a leader and have achieved a mission in winning competitions. You definitely have what it takes to compete for an appointment, but don’t worry about your chances now because you have done all you can and it is out of your hands now.
