My son received a LOA, Congressal Nomination and was DQ by DOD. His application is not longer active.

His admission counselor said they would contact him if they needed anything and a waiver would be filed on his behalf. The condition they are DQing him for was something he suffered with as a child. Any recommendations? As a librarian, we don't qualify for financial aid or scholarships. His hopes, dreams and hard work are possibly shattered because of a childhood issue faced by so many.

Rebuttal process?

What exactly is the condition? My guess is that the waiver authority decided at usna that they aren’t going to give a waiver for his condition and closed his app

bed wetting as a child

After reading the medical considerations for admissions for the Naval acadmey, appendix A, this condition is not a disqualifying condition and must have occured in the last 12 months according to DOD

So sorry to hear of your son’s misfortune. Know the feeling. My DS #2 had an NROTC 4year to UMICH in hand. We know the feeling of dream school going from $0 to $40k with one kick of a soccer ball during gym class. Not to mention the lost opportunity to work with the biggest baddest machines on land or water. @MullenLE walked us through the process Which was unsuccessful.

First thing is make enough posts to be able to PM @MullenLE . He is the authority on DODMERB questions.

Don’t take a defeatist attitude yet about scholarships.

Sweet Jesus! my DS #1 wet his bed until he was 7 or 8 and now is an Army Captain in a very physically stressful situation.

There is an age based bell curve for bed wetting for boys. Some never wet the bed. Some do until they are 10.Most stop sometime in between. It’s physiological and evolutionary, like many ear infections, wisdom teeth, etc.

I wish you the best!

If they said they are requesting a waiver then it isn't over. DODMERB sees conditions as black and white and if your son met one of those disqualifying conditions then they have to DQ him. But I would think that is something that would be commonly waived.

Let me provide some facts here:

1. This is the standard applied to all applicants for enlistment, Induction, or appointment:

"d. History or treatment of the following voiding symptoms within the previous 12 months in the absence of a urinary tract infection: (1) Urinary frequency or urgency more than every 2 hours on a daily basis. (2) Nocturia more than two episodes during sleep period. (3) Enuresis.("BED WETTING") (4) Incontinence of urine, such as urge or stress. (5) Urinary retention. (6) Dysuria>"

2. This does NOT appear to jive with the report from drrubio21's report.

3. Drrubio21 should have his SON, THE APPLICANT, comply with the FAST sticky under the DoDMERB tab on the SA Forums. Our system is under maintenance until at least 9 PM MST tomorrow night. If sent, I can respond to the SON in a more educated fashion about HIS DQ and the way ahead.

This is a perfect example of paying realllllyyyyy close attention to detail when filling this questionnaire piece out. Have a parent read the question (not just answer a question from your kid). LOOK at what can happen! This is a timely post for me BC I was cleaning the desk, came across DS’s printed questionnaire. Item #45 says “bedwetting after age 12 (mark yes or no)”. So something wasn’t filled out correctly, or??

I don’t know if this was the scenario with OP, but I can picture the candidate filling out their questionnaire at their computer, mom puttering in the kitchen, and the kid yells out “hey mom did I ever have bedwetting?” “Oh yes you did Johnny!”

Johnny checks yes...

And here we are with a closed application.

LITERALLY how DD's went down, ended up with a twisty and time consuming process but fortunately ended with an appointment...

Calling @drrubio21 to read the post above mine. 👍

Bravo Zulu, Larry!

Looks like from OP's older post, they did receive a response already back in January from Mr Mullen and acknowledged it. If all is as they stated, something doesn't make sense. Either way, they know the recommendation/process for Mr Mullen. FYI!!

A couple thoughts here.. Something isn't adding up here, but reading between the lines...DODMERB disqualified, and presumably asked for additional information (remedial) to verify and evaluate. The Naval Academy will consider waivers, but is certainly not under any obligation to grant waivers , and some conditions are not waiverable. The bottom line, if you have gone through the entire process, and are confident that the history and record or clear, there really isn't any recourse . USNA doesn't consider appeals. It's just a fact of life that some very great kids get left out because of some past medical condition that does not seem to affect their life. The military has their reasons for their standards, and a very good process for evaluating. Contrary to popular opinion, it's been oft said here (and Mr. Mullen can probably confirm), DODMERB's job isn't to exclude candidates, and it's been my experience that they do a pretty good job helping candidates get through the process.

His hopes, dreams and hard work are possibly shattered because of a childhood issue faced by so many.
I wanted to address this comment .... what are his hopes and dreams, to attend USNA or to serve as a Naval Officer ? Attending USNA is a great aspiration for a high schooler, but it is not an end all...it is really just one pathway to service as a Naval Officer.. There are other pathways including NROTC, OCS or various Enlisted to Commissioning pathways. Every one needs a Plan B (and C, D....), and even then prepare to adjust those plans as circumstances change.

A few FACTS here:

1. DoDMERB always tries to get to YES. That is our primary stimulus.

2. DoDMERB is charged with being the honest broker = evaluate the exam and history results, in accordance with DoD standards.

3. ALL, SA/ROTC waiver authorities try to get to YES, if possible. Their overriding principle is: can the applicant be trained, commissioned, and be worldwide deployable. ( good thing I reread my response before sending — it changed deployable to “deplorable 😂 “)

4. Though some parents disagree in the short term, there can be NO intellectually honest, say again NO INTELLECTUALLY HONEST, disagreement, with https://DoDMERB.tricare.osd.mil, “Questions about the Process,” paragraph 4.

5. Parental Teaching moments? YES.

6. Parental Action moments directly involving the application process beyond the obvious? NO. I see these from Parents, rationalized from benign to the extreme, 20 hours a day, 7 days per week!!! As a result, some applicants are ill-prepared for what lay before them, whereas, they could have been very successful.

7. *** Since 12:38 PM yesterday, I have NOT received an email at DoDMERB_SAFORUMS@yahoo.com, from any applicant, with a scenario remotely similar to this thread. Until I see the real details, all else is pure speculation, rumor, or theory.

8. Standing by to assist......
