Just a follow up. He is talking to an ANG and Air Force Recruiter, he is also considering SWO with the Navy. In the meantime, he is driving for Uber in Denver and actually making pretty good money. The other day he made $ 230 in a 6 hour shift. Not bad. He does not want to do that long term, so he is exploring his options.

Uber sounds great to a lot of folks until they get a Form 1099-MISC for $30K, $40K or $50K, with no taxes withheld. They end up owing $10K-$20K in state and federal taxes and, living payday-to-payday, have no way of paying their tax bill.

IRS gets angry. Files a tax lien. Bad credit rating (at a minimum) ensues.

This gets flagged when Uber driver tries to enlist or become an officer. Bye bye military career. Bye bye any hope for reasonable car loan interest rats, mortgages, better material life (which rocks unless you're a communist).

A lot of 20-somethings scoff at corporate jobs & cubicles, but they have higher income, benefits, health insurance, 401Ks, etc.

So does the military, for that matter, even if you're an officer in charge of the motor pool.

Mmmm, I gotta disagree with the majority on this one. Space Force...definitely Space Force. He’ll be a groundbreaker (or whatever they call the first ones to join the Space Force). Best wishes to your DS.
The absolute example of an indoor/office job. The Space Force is NOT going to be making its new members into astronauts for the forseeable future. Their basic mission set will be managing, controlling, defending, tasking,etc our satellites. When (if) we have actual military spacecraft, this might change but that is far in the future.

My youngest called me the other day to ask what I thought of him going into the military. We discussed all the branches. He would like to travel, see the world, and serve his country. He is the outdoorsy type. He rock climbs, hikes the mountains in Colorado. skis, snowboards, etc. He wrestled in HS and club wrestled at UD, He played HS football for 5 years, at his school they were allowed to play as 8th graders. I think he was a Capt senior year in both sports.

He wants something that won't confine him to a desk. I suggested Navy as an SWO. He spoke with his brother a Captain in the USAF and a pilot. My other son asked me why I would not recommend the AF, I said besides pilot, there aren't many jobs that would interest his brother because he would be confined to a base somewhere.

Any other officer jobs in any of the services that might appeal to him?

Thanks for your help.
What about AF special ops -- STO or CRO (Special Tactics Officer / Combat Rescue Officer). Christcorp's son is a STO

@DevilDog ,

Please keep us posted about your DS's decision.

One of the reasons many of us emptynester/old timers keep coming back to SAF is to hear updates about those cadets/mids who have commissioned and are out in the world. Somewhere out there in the ether is a "what are they doing now" thread.

Best of luck to your DS!
