Just as the title says. I know there isn’t much information on NAPS out there and wanted to do whatever I can to give some insight to incoming Napsters (I won’t go too much into detail as that ruins the fun)

I did a few Semper Fi society meetings and walked onto the lax team as well. Also very familiar with the academic standard… I’ll leave that up to interpretation.

What is your advice to incoming napsters , underage or not, who enjoy the occasional adult beverage aka booze.

Our year at NAPS was a dry year. At certain events they let prior enlisted who were of age drink. As far as on liberty and overnights I wouldn’t advise it. Depending on how late it is in the year they’ll hit you with a 6K and restriction (which is worse at NAPS than they academy) or straight up separate/not recommend you for an appointment.

Not saying a few people hypothetically could indulge in said adult beverage if they’re smart enough.

Yes it was the loss of leave, or Liberty, being on report, and the restrictions that came , restrictions like being in Newport for a whole leave period instead of home for thanksgiving enjoying life and freedom , and the separations from NAPS that came after , that I was asking about,

The world is full of career lance cpls that thought they were smart enough.

You had plenty of classmates that thought they were smart enough.

If you really want to help these new napsters they need tips on how not to become the 1/3 of a naps class that does not make it to graduation,

What was the liberty like as the year progressed? When/how often did you guys get overnight lib?

Not the OP but I know the answer for this past year.

At least 4 or 5 overnights maybe as many as 6 not counting parents weekend or graduation. Certainly not a lot.

And many did not get to take all these few because they were on restriction. Often on restriction for drinking related issues.

If you are a prior dont be the nice one buying booze for the underage. You will both end up paying the price.

And here from closely watching several naps classes is my advice for making it through and to the USNA

1–don’t quit. Refuse to quit no matter how much you want to quit. Some are quitting (DOR) that first day that first month that first semester. And many down loaded the DOR forms to quit and filled them out but just never submitted them. Priors are not immune to this.

2-don’t get into trouble. And most trouble I saw was drinking related. Connected to this——if your company does not have liberty don’t decide to go out the back window for a little personal leave. They have cameras.

3-show up as often as you can to get academic help. Show you are really trying. Some that were able to do that were able to pass even with “allegedly“ failing grades.

4-don’t assume this 9 months will be a pleasant experience. Know that going in and be prepared.

5-if you are a prior take care of that non prior room mate. Good leadership is noticed.

#6-don’t cheat. A fair number were kicked out for cheating. They do seem good at finding those that cheat. It sounded like plagiarism being the main issue for the most part. Better to fail and hope for mercy .The teachers and co officers want to pass you on.

#7 don’t lie to,protect yourself or others. If you screw up and get caught just take the punishment. Lying was another good reason for being sent home.

Its only 9 months. Suck it up :)

Small Team Bacsi just about hit the nail on the head. It became a joke to yell “overnight” anytime anything was announced at formation because of the little amount of overnights we got.

Walking onto lax allowed me to see many more overnights than most.

As far as regular liberty, we have extra instruction every Saturday morning until 11 (you can basically relax in Ripley unless you’re on the math movement order, like me.) After that liberty starts and ends around 10. Sunday liberty is much shorter and ends at 5:30.

Make sure you go to EI. It’s a big cushion and a major talking point if you ever go before a review board. I didn’t have to, but my teachers wrote me great recommendations because I was active in EI, even on weekends.

Appreciate the info! Could you give any insight to what the sports period is like if you’re not playing a sport? Can we go to the gym for those hours or is it always battalion/guided PT?

Sure! Batt PT is every evening during indoc. During the ac year, you’re basically free to do whatever you want after EI ends if you don’t play a sport. You can go to Chaffee (the base gym) or 1801 (the gym reserved primarily for NAPS). Chaffee has a pool, indoor track, and basketball court. Nimitz field also has a track and is right outside of the barracks.

You will have an organized batt PT maybe once a marking period though.

I will hazard a guess (head the term from my 2/C) that EI is Extra Instruction.

Great thread.

Hi @YardDog136 , please advise:
a) what is EI ?
b) do you/NAPS use Navy Fed Cred Union for all payments?
Many thanks!
My son was at NAPS this year and you can use your own bank however they encourage you to sign up for Navy Fed Credit Union for direct deposit. He signed up for NFCU and had no issues. I think he liked that I did not have access to see his accounts anymore LOL.

Son is there right now. Once INDOC is over, if you are not in a sport, OR on remedial PT, meaning you failed your initial PRT, PT is all you. Run, lift weights, as you see fit.

What was the competition like walking onto a team... Were you still able to get close with your teammates even though you walked on? Also, what was it like entering the academy a year older than your classmates?
