Does anybody know if it is required or recommended or even relevant to have wisdom teeth removed before reporting? I say this as I write a check to a dental surgeon we were referred to by our son's dentist who referred us because his son is a Plebe at USNA and he was required to have his removed. I also say this as we have another son who graduates USMMA next month who was required to have his removed prior to reporting 4 years ago. I expect we will soon get a packet from USNA that might even address this, but if anybody knows anything about this please let me know. I don't get the Service Academy's hang up on wisdom teeth. I guess I do for the merchant marines who can be in the middle of the ocean and days away from any medical relief, but not sure about USNA. Thanks.

USNA won't require them to be removed unless they pose a problem.

But if I were you I'd get them out if you can (barring any DoDMERB risks). I'm having some issues with mine now; Brigade Dental is taking good care of me, but it's just a hassle.

Some NAPSters this year got wisdom teeth removed, but the majority (including myself) did not. If they aren't bothering you, don't worry about it.

This gets asked all the time. The statement that someone son's was required to have their wisdom teeth removed just because he was a plebe at USNA is incorrect. There is NO such requirement. Generally, what has been discussed in the various threads here was that IF someone in h.s. currently has issues with their wisdom teeth or their dentist recommends their removal for medical reasons, it makes sense to do that BEFORE I-day, since you can recover more easily at home. I doubt that NAPS would have any medical requirements that are different from USNA.

Having healthy wisdom teeth removed is NOT part of the current application process.

It is not a requirement, but I have heard that is better to do it before attending a SA so that you don't fall behind in your classes, if it is time to take them out. USMMA plebes are told to get them removed before I-Day and due to the fact that they participate in Sea Year between 3rd and 2nd class year. Also, if you wait until after the age of 25, the wisdom teeth decide to latch on to your jaw bone and are more painful to be taken out after that time.

^^ Or to generate revenue. Most medical websites indicate there is no need to remove healthy wisdom teeth. I am adult and still have most of mine.

Removal of healthy wisdom teeth has never been a requirement for academy admissions, which is what the original question was asking.

Yes, I got your point but it also depends on your dental condition but not at all compulsory for academy admissions.
