The NAPS information guide says:

“Female midshipman candidates will not be required to get their hair cut, but their hairstyle and grooming must be in adherence with Navy Regulations...”

This is also what the packet said for the NAPS class of 2018. Is there anyone from that class that could explain what this means exactly? I always thought the mandatory bob was looming, but this statement is saying I can keep my hair long. Did something recently change?

I'm pretty sure getting a "bob" is a plebe summer thing, if it's even a thing anymore. What will be required is that you wear your hair according to Navy regs. That may mean a bun. It might mean wearing it fairly short. This site should help you figure it out. http://www.navy.mil/ah_online/um/femalehair.html
Remember - google is your friend.

Yeah- I read up on all the maintenance regs. I’m just confused because I’ve seen pictures of groups of girls at NAPS in recent years with their hair all bobbed and was thinking they may have changed the rules this year. I was so mentally prepared to cut off a foot of hair and now I may not have to?! Even so, that’s okay.. the longer I can grow it before plebe summer the more I can donate

I'll leave it to the women here to comment and give you advice, but shorter hair may be more a matter of convenience than requirement.

It is much more comfortable for Plebe Summer to have regulation cut for women. It will grow out "somewhat" fast and easier to take care of as years go on. Bun can come later when you are upper Class or Graduate. With time constraints on time during Summer and Plebe Year mornings long hair may not be feasible. Just a Dad with a comment. They always shaved ours so we never had the problem. Didn't even need a comb.

As a female grad, I actually think long hair is easier. If you practice the bun now and can do that right it takes 30 seconds once you master it. Also if you cruise through some of the previous threads in the USNA forum you will see lots of tips and tricks related to ‘sock buns’ and other items. The reason I say it’s easier is the bob cut is simpe to shower and wash, but to keep out of you face when running and constantly up/down with PT it sucks. If you choose to keep it long, practice daily until you master it. NAPS Indoc is relatively short and you will have more time once the academic year hits. Prior enlisted females will also help with tips and tricks along with Midshipmen detailers who have learned them. Your hair will be wet a lot, so take it down at night to dry out. If you cut it for a bob, make sure it above the bottom of the collar standing at attention. Either way is fine, pick what is best for you.

I honestly can’t remember if NAPS required the cut or not in the past. Looking at some old images from the Internet, it would appear they did. I know the rumor pops up each year that new classes of female plebes won’t have to, but each year that rumor has been wrong. Well, maybe it is changing.
