What are the similarities and differences between NAPS Indoc and Plebe Summer? I’ve heard a lot of rumors about how Indoc is harder and trying to see if that’s true

I attended NAPS 30+ years ago, but then INDOC lasted about 10-14 days, and was a very abbreviated introduction to military life, ie. wear uniforms, march, field day a room, etc. . USNA sent a cadre of Detailers to run the NAPS Indoc. I had experience in Civil Air Patrol, so really wasn't a challenge at all (and to be honest, not a whole lot of memories, it went by pretty fast).

Plebe Summer was a lot more thorough and intense, but of course, with NAPS background , it was a lot easier than someone coming fresh from HS.

For someone coming straight from High School, I would say Plebe Summer is a lot harder --much longer and more intense, and alot more attention from the Upper Class.

I️m in the class of ‘21 and was a direct. Most of my friends that did NAPS Indoc did say I️t was a little harder just because they had a lot of grey space (free time) so they got PT’d more. However , indoc at NAPS is shorter and makes plebe summer a lot more manageable.

Indoc I believe is still around 2 weeks long and staffed by Mids who come up from USNA. It’s only two weeks so a lot of the basics like drill, basic watch standing, uniforms, getting ready for ac year, PT.

I'm also a direct from the class of '21. Many of my friends also told me that Indoc was definitely more intense than Plebe Summer, but, as a whole, Plebe Summer was harder due to the duration.

In NAPS Indoc, there is very slim ROE guidance compared to Plebe Summer, apparently. The detailers can do a lot more physical exercises to you at one time, according to my NAPS friends. Nothing like hazing or anything of the sort, though, as the Navy does not tolerate that type of action at all. Just some good fun...

Indoc is two weeks, then you go to the academic year and get free weekends as long as you are in good standing or not on watch. Very soon you will learn you can do anything for 2 weeks. I have spent over two weeks in one fighting position. Plebe summer each individual event is not that bad. It’s when you combine them all together with heat (much hotter than RI), lack of sleep, and 6 weeks that it builds. 6 weeks isn’t that bad, but it’s long enough to not be right around the corner in that environment. Then you throw another 9 months of lack of sleep, academics, pro knowledge, watch standing, sports, PT, life, etc that is the trudge. You get very little time away to recharge. You are always on unless you are in your room, library or found somewhere to escape. NAPS and USNA are two different places with two different missions. By the first few weeks of the academic year you can’t tell the difference between a NAPSster, direct, Foundation.

Indoc is 3 weeks. My 2/C says indoc was MUCH harder than plebe summer. And most of her NAPS friends agree. It’s on a closed base, not at tourist attraction, so the rules of what can/cannot be done are different. She said plebe summer was summer camp compared to Indoc. No care packages during indoc, and parent weekend isn’t until October, so it’s a long time until they see their parents.
Once the ac year starts, though, NAPSters have much more free time, liberty, and money, which can be a dangerous combination.

> Of course, the initial introduction (immersion) into military life is going to be the shock...and I suspect that everyone that went to NAPS will say that Plebe Summer was easier for them than their peers coming right of HS. I find it hard to believe that today's Navy would tolerate any activity that couldn't be done openly and in public. If anything, I would expect that Plebe Summer is so closely choreographed (and there are so many officers around watching) that there is little opportunity for Detailer's to go off script, while the NAPS detail is probably less structured and less supervised.

> Dangerous ...or fun, depends on perspective ! I remember it well... getting paid every two weeks. E-1 pay wasn't much, but when fresh out of high school, it was great ! Newport was great -- and I was there in the midst of an America's Cup year (back in the old format), so it was really hopping. I'm sure that current attitude toward alcohol has put a damper on things, but I'm sure there are still plenty of opportunities to find fun, or trouble.

Actually Indoc at NAPS is 3 weeks. I know this because my daughter just went through it. To suggest it’s a walk in the park I can only tell you that based on the number of people who ended up on crutches or otherwise disabled would suggest otherwise. In short it’s tough.

Indoc operates under much looser rules regarding pt as punishment than plebe summer and detailers are given a much looser leash there. I was a NAPSter and also went back to NAPS as a detailer. I've read the rules for detailers for both. Coming back after being a detailer, I was shocked at how easily my classmates got in trouble for reprimanding plebes -- actions that wouldn't turn any heads at NAPS. That being said, very few for either plebe summer or Indoc attrite, so obviously it isn't that bad. The rules for each seem to get stricter each year, but more so for USNA.

EASis just out of curiosity, why would you ask this question? NAPS is not something you can can apply to. No offense intended, now I’m just being curious.
