NAPS offers 2022

DD got flagged from DoDMERBS yesterday for basically knee tendon inflammation 3 years ago. She’s been active in collegiate level ROTC for last 2 yrs. while in HS since no JROTC available. She received email from USNA health this morning saying she’s in the waiver process…. Hopefully the process moves quickly. She has to accept or decline a ROTC scholarship by 4/21 at her plan B school
DD waiver granted and updated on DODMERBS today. Waiting for the USNA portal to update to accept

I look forward to the opportunity of passing my Father’s (USN O-6 (Deceased) NESEP) Sword to her. Ironically, the inscription reads “Presented to _____ by the City of Newport, RI”

That is a lovely thing to do, to pass on the sword.

Something to keep in mind, though, if down the road she actually tries to wear and use it, the length of the sword versus her height can have unintended results. They are sized for height. See link below. If it’s too long, the sword in the upright position can literally be right up at the ear, and if scabbarded, hang very clumsily too far down. Or a rather comical effect if too short. If size is an issue, then it makes a memorable presentation piece in a custom rack.

Make a note to be sure and get new sword lace and get it properly knotted around the hilt.

Thank you. Completely understand. I’ve already explained that would be an issue and I’d have a consult if able to make it shorter (Dad was 6’2, she’s 5’3) Ive personally been measured while in HS JROTC at Fishburne Military School c/83

As someone who was gifted a sword that was WAAAAAAYYYYYY too long - made for someone a foot taller than me, we looked at it and resizing it was pretty much a non-starter since the work required on the blade and scabbard would be massive. For a family memento like this, perhaps put it on a sword plaque which you can find.

Thank you for the insite

Congratulations on your DD's decision. My DD will be there, too.

BTW, there is an Instagram page the NAPSTERS are posting to for NAPS. Within a week your DD will receive a really nice binder with a Certificate saying she was appointed to NAPS and on the other page a Navy collage. Most of the Instagram kids take a picture holding it. Finally, there is a NAPS Facebook that has the schedules and lots of pix of midshipmen doing what the Academy plebes do, marching, exercise, running, sports, award ceremonies, etc.

Forms:
She should see about 5 pdf forms to download from her CIS portal. Fill out, sign and upload. One is somewhat tricky, the Police Record Check. Your DD has to physically go to your local law enforcement and have them fill out the lower half. There is typically a small fee for this. For us it was $10. But finding out what organization was responsible for this and where to go took a little detective work.

More forms:

If she hasn't already, she needs to go to the NAPS site and download the forms and instructions. She will need to enlist in Navy reserve NLT June 30th. This is not trivial, she will need to bring originals of HS diploma, birth certificate, SSN card, drivers license, passport along with the forms. My DD called around to 3 enlistment offices and they said they did not do the NAPS enlistment. She finally called the USNA POC and he said yes they do, it is in their manual. Since they don't get credit for the enlistment, I think they blew her off. We finally found one that did officer enlistment. Why? Because the oath has to be done by an officer. Not the usual petty officers at the enlistment offices. The USNA said any active or retired officer can administer the oath from any service, not just the Navy. The NAPS POCs said if there was any questions or push back from the enlistment office to have them call NAPS and they will guide them thru the process.

Finally, if like us you plan to drop your DD off on July 25th you will have to fill out the visitor form for everyone 18 and older, separately, and send back to NAPS at least 4 weeks prior to your visit. They will want the driver's licenses of each person. You DD is exempt as her PTR papers will get her thru the gate.

Congratulations! So happy to see waivers being accepted! My DD is still waiting and this gives me hope!

My recruiters are also ignoring me. I don’t know what should I do

This is what I would tell my DD: call the USNA POCs listed on the NAPS instructions and let them know about the ghosting. Then you call the enlistment office and schedule a visit and then have them call the POC while you are there. Of course, you will have informed the POC prior to the visit date and time so they can be available. Welcome to the military. Some great people who make it work and a lot of folks just there to collect a paycheck. The "Hurry up and Wait" culture. Good luck and let us know how it goes. Oh, and don't forget if you go in for the oath taking you need an officer to do it. That is a major push back from them - "Sorry sir, we don't have an officer assigned to this office."

I’m not sure whats referred to, here, as far as needing a recruiter, or trusting the process.

If you are having issues, try a different office. Or go to a big Navy headquarter (maybe even out of town), not a small satellite office. Or a Navy Reserves office. I’m not familiar with what’s required, but I do know from local stories here, that sometimes it’s a challenge (like the police records check). And not from the lack of a work ethic, but more from an understanding of what going on/required.

NAPS is a weird thing, for someone unfamiliar. A recruiter. Even less understanding of NAPS, than USNA. And recruiters are currently way over worked (watch the news).

I think the secret is hitting the right person. But I also know that’s sometimes a challenge.

What DD and I have learned: 1) Recruiters do not get credit towards their quotas for NAPS enlistments. 2) NAPS instructions are in the recruiter's manual and 3) None of the forms are foreign to the recruiters - they are the same forms used as if the person is 18 and walks and says I want to join the Navy as an enlisted sailor. Number 1 is prob the biggest reason for the push back. Number 2, I would assume, rightly, that as part of the position the recruiter would have read through the manual at least once in their professional career - if not gone over it during training. It is not rocket science - DD/DS has filled out the sections they are required to do, recruiter fills in their sections, then they review the verification documents, then recruit and recruiter sign, witness and date said forms. Take the oath. Then make copies. Voila, DD/DS is now and E-1 and is ready for I-day at NAPS.

I went today and everything went very smooth. At first my recruiter wanted to send me to MEPS. But I called USNA’s POC Chief Micah Siegfried and he explained my recruiter that he can do it and that it’s way easier than it looks like.
Any recruiter can do it, just make sure you have an Officer to provide the oath. I posted a message on my community's Facebook group and a Air Force O6 vetaran was kind enough of providing the oath to me.

Officially in the Navy!!! I am so happy

OUTSTANDING!!!! Calling the NAPS POC was key. My DD has appointment set for June 6th, day after HS graduation.

E1 basic pay is: $1,773.00/month. Should start in August. If possible, get a Navy Federal Credit Union account:
