NAPS Questions?

"NAPS Material"

Good "NAPS Material": A good candidate for the Naval Academy Prep School, who just needs help in an area or maybe two to help increase their chance of success at USNA. Sometimes NAPS is offered to someone who simply didn't get a nomination, perhaps because they are in a very competitive district.

What is "Learning Skills"?

Learning skills is this course every M/C is required to take. Its things like making a 5-day study plan to effectively study for a test, how to overcome test anxiety, etc.

I'll be darned. They didn't have that in my day.

Might have done me some good.

What is your monthly stipend at NAPS? You are considered to be on active duty pay correct? What are your expenses that everyone is required to pay for, not the extras that varies from each person. Thanks GO NAVY!!!

Well, things have certainly changed since my day, but back in 1986-1987, I recall making about $400 per month (as an E-3) after taxes. I could have pocketed that entire amount and lived just fine on base because uniforms, meals, etc., were all covered from the gross (details are scetchy; sorry). Of course, I wouldn't have been doing much in terms of fun.

The upshot of it all was that I had $400 per month to do with whatever I so wanted. Good thing I didn't do too much because I lived off what I had saved at NAPS while I was a Plebe. I didn't make that much again until I was a 2/C!

Unless things have changed, YES, you are considered active-duty military (as opposed to Reserve) while at NAPS.

Depending on if you payed your BAC fund off (Battalion activities committee for fun trips we go on), the most a civillian can make is just short of $800 permonth. You are on active duty and get paid on the 15th and 30th of every month (every 2 wks).

Each M/C had to pay a little more than $1000 on I-Day for the BAC fund in full, or it will be deducted from your monthly pay. Also, we are all paying off our $1100 uniform bill. The government pays for about $530 of the uniform bill for prior civillians coming just outta high school. I only owe $280 now yay! And that uniform bill has to be paid by March (spring break).

Suggestions: get a scholarship or something to pay the BAC off on I-Day, or get a cool job that pays alot (I was a lifeguard and swim instructor and made $500/week... yeah!) to get it paid. Save your money.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but do civilians go into NAPS as E-1's, those with 2 years of JROTC go in as E-2's, and those with 3 or more years JROTC go in as E-3's?

That's the way it was back when Noah and I were there.

No! Gosh! I wish that were the case, with the 4 years of NJROTC under mybelt. All the kids straight from high school are E-1s.

does NAPS/USNA ask you for your first semester or final year grade for 12th graders.. im getting c's and b's.. and when i sent my transcript, i had straight a's.

and how much does an e-1 make at NAPS when you deduct all the costs. so basically, how much money do you have in your hands when you get paid monthly or biweekly.

I'm pretty sure NAPS didn't see my final grades, I dont think they care to be honest. They don't care what you did anymore, they wanna see you prove what you know...
