Hey, I was thinking of going to NAPS next year. What's NAPS like for all those who have been and is it really hard to get into USNA?

Aqua Rain you dont apply to Naps you know that right?
You apply to the USNA and if you not qualified enough, you might get offered an appintment to NAPS or another prep school such as NMMI and MMI

I know. I got offered an appointment and yesterday I decided to accept the oppourtunity offered at NAPS. Sorry my phrasing of words was off.
I just wanted to know what I could expect at NAPS.

Two Steilacoom HS Student females appointed to different Prep Schools (USNA & USMMA).. The administration should be proud!!!

Yes, I sent of the letter this morning. I can't wait. CGA was taking too long and they nearly deleted my file. I stopped them though from deleting it back in February.
How's Joyce doing? Is she going to Prep School?

Yeah CGA is a bit slow....
Joyce got prep school appt from USMMA (they use New Mexico Military Institute). We are going to USMMA later this month for a visit though
I am surprised she didnt tell you.She isnt going to accept the appt quite yet....

According to the official NAPS website the I-Day date will not be release until approx. May. Typically it is the last week of July though as you mentioned.

Hi Aqua Rain,
My son will likely be attending NAPS along with you this summer. I can tell you from my daughter who is a NAPS c/o 2004 grad that the Indoc is Tough with a capital T. Very physically gruelling for almost everyone there.
On the physical end the best thing I could suggest to you or any m/c who are headed to NAPS is that they start/continue working out and learn to run for endurance ie, 3-5 miles. In the heat & humidity.
Academically, the environment is extremely supportive and if you want to make it you'll likely will. Whatever you do do NOT get into military/disciplinary trouble or you won't make it to the academy. It shows above all else that you can not follow instructions therefore not fit to lead.

I've been working out all year in various areas as my dad has directed me as he is about to retire from the Army (but he does support my Naval persuits). I'm definetly going to increase my running though for distance as well as my strength training.
I definetly expect Indoc to be my hardest challenge yet. I looked at the pictures on the Parents Website for NAPS. It looks like AIM at the Coast Guard Academy all over again but for a longer period and 10x as difficult because of the training, the trainers, and the time frame. As hard as this seems, I am sure that the time at NAPS will be well worth it and for the best in the long term.
I'm excited about going and nervous at the same time.
How does your son feel about going to NAPS?

Well the CGA nearly deleted my file my making a mistake and accidentally marking my file for deletion. A letter came asking if I was sure that I wanted my file to be deleted and to call. I called the next morning and made sure that Admissions did not delete my file and kept it open for review by the Board. It was crazy and very strange considering that I had not asked that my file be deleted, only once again reviewed with new letters and test scores.

Sounds like you've also got your families full support, another bonus. If you follow through with your workouts, especially the running you'll do well. Also, you'll be less likely to injure yourself like those who wait till there to try and get in shape.Like you, my son is feeling excited and nervous as well. He knows that NAPS is a great opportunity for anyone interested in serving as a Naval officer. His sister in now in the fleet and has a very productive life. We were not very military savvy before my daugther applied to USNA. Maybe you can share some of your experiences growing up as a military brat. Wondering what made you choose 1) an SA 2)Navy over Army.
Oh, btw, the dorms are new at NAPS so they should be very comfortable!

Thanks NavyMom2008. It's good to hear that the dorms at NAPS are new. That is relief. I am sure your son and I are going through very similar emotions right now of excitment and nerves. But here is some military brat advice I hope will be useful.
1.) Memorize the ranks as quick as you can. Both Officer, Warrent Officer and Enlisted. During INDOC, I am absolutely possetive that they will test us on this, the first day when we meet the people who are going to train us. This is really important because we will be trained by both Marines and Sailors. None of their ranks are the same but here is a little secret: When it comes to officers, in the Marines, they have the same rank as Army and Air Force Officers 2nd Lt. to 4 Star General
(5 if WWIII breaks out and some one is promoted but hopefuly that won't happen soon). It's kind of different for Navy and Coast Guard. They go from Ensign to 4 Star Admiral (or 5; same rule). It's just a matter of practice with Officers. It's pretty easy.
Same with Warrent Officers.
Enlisted, you have to study. Especially the Marines.The Marine Corps is very unique when it comes to their Enlisted side. They have the two unique ranks of Lance Corprals and Gunnery Sergeants. Your son really needs to know these and be able to differentiate them from the Army ranks which we may be tested on. Navy is easier in a sense that it is logical. For E-1 to E-3 you rise gradually from Seaman Recruit to Seaman Apprentice to Seaman. Same with the next 3 ranks, Petty Officer 3rd, 2nd, 1st. It only gets more complicated when you get to Chief Petty Officers. It goes Chief Petty Officer, Senior Chief Petty Officer, and Master Chief Petty Officer. It is all sequential and studying should make it easier.
Wikipedia has a great display of this by pictures. I highly suggest it.
2.) Gain a sense of humor. As a military brat, I am usually around very strict, orderly people who are like this 80% of the time. The other 20% they are relaxed and tend to have a sense of humor about things. It's good to on task and on point but when your son has down time, he should use it. And the comedy will definetly help during INDOC. As much as we are going to be drilled, yelled at, yelling, and such, humor is a key. I mean we all are going to sound like mice by the end of the first week, have a little humor about it.
3.) SOUND OFF!!!!
Being loud will get you on their good side. When the trainers at INDOC want your son to sound off, he needs to sound off. He must be loud;your son will loose his voice at some point, so he should get ready to sound horrid for a few days.
4.) Don't take things to personally.
The trainers at INDOC have a job to do. That job is to train all of the NAPSters to become great leaders of the Navy and Marine Corps. They will say things to break your son, give him challenges he may not be able to face, but do not let your son allow them to break his spirit. They will all break us down, but they will build us back up better than we were than we came there.
I think that's all the military brat advice I have right now. Ask more questions if you have any. Oh and before I forget, I chose a Service Academy because I wanted to not have a regular college experience and serve in the military in a leadership position as an attorney. Also I chose Navy over Army because I have been connected to the Army for my entire life and I wanted to do something different and independent of my family.

Well, I thought about that but I only had a one week window for NAPS and I took it. I know it was risky, but I figured that this had more of a garuntee than the CGA which I may not hear back from until April.

NAPS stuff
I'm currently at NAPS awaiting the graduation day! I didn't really think INDOC was that tough. Yes, I suggest you run and do push ups etc. but also have fun this summer. Now, this is subject to change and is not official yet, but our OPS calendar says that I-DAY for NAPS is tues 28JUL
