The meteors flare up in brilliant displays when they streak through Earth's atmosphere at about 65 kilometers per second (that's nearly 150,000 mph), according to NASA astronomer Mitzi Adams. Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Get a good look at the terrain surrounding NASA's Curiosity rover in a place that's known as Mars' "Promised Land." Adams hosted a live Web chat of the Orionid meteor shower late Saturday and early Sunday from NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., where a camera beamed live views of the "shooting stars" display across the Internet.
