NASS 2016 Q&A Thread

My DD has not communicated with her DM since she first arrived. I think my DW was expecting texts every 30 minutes with photos, LOL. Should we expect no communications the entire week or is my DD just having too much fun right now? Did they go dark?

To be honest, this is something we didn't actually consider haha. Though it is true that we keep the candidates very busy throughout the week, I will make a point to mention during our leadership meeting tomorrow that squad leaders should encourage candidates to call or at least text their parents upon arrival (for those who flew in) so their parents know they made it alright and at sometime throughout the week during personal time so parents know that their son/daughter is still alive (trust me, everyone is doing good thus far! haha)

Thank you for bringing this to my attention, this can help out for future sessions as well!

Thank for you for leading the next generation of future midshipmen.

My DS took the CFA today and was very pleased with his results.

Will he be told if he officially passes and when will the score be uploaded on the portal?

Thank you again.

DS will be attending Session 3 by himself. I appreciate if you could pass this along to session leadership. Thanks.

Candidates will be notified by the end of the week only if they failed some portion of the CFA. If they don't hear anything from their squad leaders, that means they passed. We have a accountibility system in place to ensure that notification are taking place and no one leaves summer seminar not knowing if they passed or failed. As for the scores on the portal, candidate's squad leaders will be logging in scores online sometime in the next 48 hours (pretty much during their downtime) and that will updated in the portal.

NOTE: If it's still like when I was applying, you will not be able to look at the actual score in the portal, only that scores have been entered (why they do it like that, I don't know. That's just the way the cookie crumbles I suppose) so I would encourage your son/daughter to write down his/her score from their squad leader to take home encase they want to try to improve their scores on another CFA at home.

I've actually already distributed word to the Company Commanders about this and brought this to my fellow team's attention. We'll make this reminder apart of our standard operating procedure for the next two sessions. Thanks!

Candidate here: I don't think I've had to charge my phone since I arrived on Saturday. There's not a whole lot of personal time but I did manage to text my parents a few times.

We were able to text with DS a bit last night. He said he doesn't have much of a signal and that verizon works best there...which we don't have :) He was happy with his CFA too. Better than last week at USMA. Looking forward to talking to him more when he's done.

Yeah, Bancroft Hall is strange like that. One side of it (2nd Regiment Side) has better service with AT&T and Sprint while the other side (1st Regiment, the side we're on for NASS) is better with Verizon. That's just the nature of the beast I guess.

Do you have a facebook page for NASS? With pictures or anything?

This is great to follow! My DD leaves Sat for Session 2. Quick question though: since her original letter and then making the payment and the online signatures should she have recieved anything else? Seems like she is packing per the list and will just meet at the BWI airport meet point. Am I or is she missing any follow up info?
Thanks!!!

I recall DS receiving a confirmation email after payment. No follow up info after that confirmation email.

@GoNavyPro...we will be on a cruise while son is at NASS...would it be a good idea to provide a backup ER number just in case to admissions?
How would I do that? Just call?

Edited: He was scheduled to go with us but got into Boys State and Session 2, so he's more excited about that than our cruise, imagine that!

Hello, Im going up to NASS this saturday and am in the middle of training for cross country this upcoming season. Will I have time to run while I'm there?

Alrighty, looks like I got some catching up to do. Session 1 is over and was awesome!

Your correct! Just everything on the packing list and we will have Midshipmen at BWI waiting for them with a Bus to take candidates back to the academy! I would also recommend printing out the confirmation email to bring along. Also this goes for everyone, I would recommend bringing your own water bottle! The ones we got this year aren't quite up to par and break easily (as we found out this week...). In the future, hopefully we'll switch back to Nalgenes, but nothing we can do for this summer.

Yes it would be a good idea to have a reachable emergency contact number for worse case scenario. Though the easiest way to do this probably would be for your son to tell his squad leader right when he arrives at the academy and we can make the change by hand. This is to ensure the detailers have the most up to date information encase the admissions office forget to forward updated paperwork our way. Also we're glad to hear he's excited to come! We've had a blast with the first week and are even more motivated for the next two weeks!

Hello, Im going up to NASS this saturday and am in the middle of training for cross country this upcoming season. Will I have time to run while I'm there?

There is morning PT every morning and a Sea Trials day that is very physically demanding. Though since it is a very busy schedule and a detailer has to be with you at all times outside of Bancroft Hall, so you will not be able to run on your own.

How should the candidates dress (or not dress) when they show up on the first day of NASS (of course, I know...but maybe some folks have that question)? I have seen a few interesting photos.

Hey everyone, I'm creating this thread for anyone coming to Summer Seminar this summer that may have last minute questions, comments, or concerns. I am one of the 1/C (aka Seniors) who is on the leadership team for NASS and will try to help mitigate last minute panicking questions to save everyone (me included :) ) some stress.

Please DO NOT ask or discuss medical issues or personal information openly on the forum to maintain privacy. Plus I'm not at liberty to discuss 99% of medical issues (pretty much only food allergy concerns).

I will try to check this at least once a day over the course of the next three weeks. Hope this helps, and have a good one everybody!

Thank you and your leadership team. It was a fantastic experience for my DS and, I'm sure, for all the attendees! Get ready for the next session!

I simply wore a polo shirt tucked in a pair of jeans with a belt. You're going to change out of the clothes and into PT gear about 10-20 minutes after you arrive, so it isn't something to stress about. As long as the outfit is somewhat conservative, you should be fine.

What kind of evaluations are given by detailers and how much do they weigh in one's application?
