Take notes y'all: memorization of new rates will be required!

Those are not "Rates" as they will all learn. If Detailer asked this question he/she is an (expletive deleted). DD was Cadre and Detailer for Plebe Summer and would never ask a stupid question like this of a Summer NASS participant or a Plebe Summer participant new to be Mid 4. Hell just ask him/her what is on the third shelf of their home refrigerator left rear?

Calm down please. The NASS detailers were just having fun with the candidates and many of them saw it that way. Afterwards everyone had a great laugh about what happened during the mock indoc and I can assure you also that many of the detailers that asked this stupid stuff were well liked by almost everyone there, both before and after.

Murf, I'm sure your DD had a great time at NASS. During Christmas Break my DS shared with us the stuff he and his fellow company plebes had to memorize and repeat. If he/they didn't memorize it all, they'd just yell out anything quickly and hope not to get noticed!

My flight boards tonight at 7 to go to NASS... should I be concerned with studying the layout and dimensions of not only the vending machines, but also my fridge?

Hahaha. There's nothing you can do to prepare for the "extra rates." I heard one guy get asked to show his funniest war face and describe his water bottle. He said it was "sir, it is most beautiful water bottle I've seen in my life sir. Sir I have bonded with it through shared experiences over the course of this experience and do not desire to ever be separated from it sir."

You can prepare for all the other rates! Although that kind of ruins the experience of trying to cram it in during whatever down time you have. Know the mission of the United States Naval Academy, Blue and Gold, and Marine/Naval ranks for now!

No. NASS Detailers are messing around with NASS kids. Plebe Summer is a different ball game with tons of memorization. Its alot less fun and more work. The memorization is lots of Navy and USMC stuff that is necessary to function as a member of the Brigade. Its teaching them to learn quickly under tough conditions and handle pressure and stress. Memorization is a huge part of the military from flight checklists, emergency procedures, orders, etc that can all be done in extremely tough and hard conditions. Boards also encompass a huge part of being an officer in which spewing out huge amounts of data while being evaluated is part of life. Plebe Year and rates are laying the ground work for that. NASS is not Plebe Summer, nor should it be. They give a few rates to show you what life is like at USNA. During the few hours they "yell" at you, they will harp on rates to see if this is something you want in your life for college and as a profession for at least 5 years.

Two weeks down, one week to go!

As for rates that candidates need to memorize: You will be given a two-sided sheet of rates that we expect candidates to memorize verbatim by Wednesday during Indoc. This includes professional knowledge about the Chain of Command (CoC), core Navy/Marine Corps values and traditions, and core USNA values and traditions. Candidates are tested under a stress induced environment to see not only if they put the time and effort into memorizing these rates, but to also see how candidates react under pressure and non-ideal situations. Just like NavyHoops said, there isn't a single service selection in the military where you won't need to memorize information, and when push comes to shove, you will have to recall said information under stressful conditions where your sailors/Marine's lives are on the line.

Towards the end of this Indoc session, it is very common for detailers to start asking comical or lighthearted questions after it is clear the candidates have memorized the required rates to satisfaction. This is just to see how the candidate will respond (not expecting a correct answer by any means) and we're not evaluating this portion/questions by any means. We change the tone and types of questions at the end to make sure the candidates understand that even though during this period of time it may of looked like their detailers were mad, angry, or even furious with them at times, that it is just a "switch" that the detailers have to apply the necessary amount of pressure.

After observing for two weeks, I have been more than pleased with the work, effort, and commitment of our detailers this year, and all have operated well within our stated RoE and regulations of how to conduct the Indoc session. If there are any questions or concerns about how my detailers have been doing their duty, please message me directly and I would be more than happy to address concerns that way. As for this forum, please continue to ask any questions concerning NASS that anyone may have for the final week. Thanks everyone!

GoNavyPro,
I appreciate for the info you have provided in the forum so that NASSers and parents will be more informed. Our DS will be attending NASS session 3. When he was attending SLE earlier this month, we didn't have this much communication from WP detailers. DS thoroughly enjoyed SLE and is looking forward to NASS next week. We hope he changes his mind and not pick the darkside.

GoNavyPro, your detailers are the reason I've seen the light. They are some of the most amazing people I have ever met and whoever chose the detailers for this year, I hope stays on for next year so that the co2022 is able to have a great experience as well.

@GoNavyPro, DS is attending NASS Session 3. He received email indicating CFA results uploaded to portal. However, portal only shows date of CFA but no actual results. Will DS get CFA details later ? If so, how ? Looking forward to photos shared on FB.

His squad leader will tell him later in the week what his score for each event was.

I'll help with the CFA questions...since this is more of an admissions question vs. NASS-specific. You can always "re-take" a CFA through January 31st (even if you already passed it). However, the most recent CFA is the ONLY one that actually counts (that means if you do really well during the CFA at NASS and decide to re-take the CFA in November, but do worse...then the November/worse scores will be used). The CFA is provided at NASS to help candidates complete that aspect of their application. To re-take a CFA, you will need to contact your admissions counselor and have them re-set the CFA module on CIS.

CFA can be transferred between USAFA/USMA -- you need to contact your admission counselor to have the scores sent to the other SAs.

If you re-take the CFA and do worse, why would you even submit it? Does USNA need to know that you re-took it. I know the person administering the exam requires a link sent by USNA to submit the score, but does USNA track if they sent out a link and it wasn't used?

(1) I am not sure if the CFA actually gets "cleared" when the AC resend the link...so, if it does get cleared...the new scores MUST be imported. Of course, one could take the CFA and then ask for the scores to be reset after the fact.
(2) You assume that it is blatantly clear that the new CFA is worse than the old CFA, which might not always be the case. What if a candidate scored (and I'll only use two events for this example) 10 pullups and a 8:00 min mile run on the initial CFA and the next CFA the candidate did 15 pullups but a 8:20 mile run. Which is better or worse? I have absolutely no idea. Is the 5 extra pullups outweigh the 20 secs? Now enumerate that for the other events. The point is...USNA isn't going to take the 15 pullups and 8:00 min mile run and lump it together. So, if the later CFA is slightly worse, that is what is recorded. In the grand scheme of things, the pushups, situps, and run are looked at more closely.
