NASS acceptance updates

Some people hear back in February, but I didn’t hear back until April because I was placed on the waitlist and eventually got rejected. I did receive an invitation to CVW in my rejection email which I took graciously and my experience at USNA solidified my desire to attend USNA.

I would recommend CVW over NASS anyways. NASS feels very much like the recruiting tool it is and it is a fun ‘summer camp’ if you’re into that (some people did very clearly hate it and I think that’s the day they closed their application). It’s a lot of information on applying and I met my admissions advisor but I already knew a lot of that stuff from my own research so it didn’t give me a ‘leg up’.
CVW was better for me in determining if I could see myself at USNA because you see how the mids live (off of lots of take out food).

I applied last year during junior HS year and didnt know i was on the wait list until April. Applied on the first few days of it opening. After i got placed on the waitlist, i got a call a week prior to the program telling me i was in.

For those who heard back, did you get accepted and, if so, did you get the week(s) that you hoped to get? If you got rejected (sorry!), was there any reference to CVW?

DS got the week he wanted. His older brother (2yrs ago) had applied later in the cycle, and did not get his first choice.

I find it interesting that USAFA summer seminar applications closed earlier than USNA (which btw is still open for more than a month), yet I have not seen any USAFA results posted yet [emoji848]?

I attended both CVW and NASS during my junior year. I felt like CVW was more of an experience to see the life of a mid during the academic year while NASS was more of a preview of plebe summer, however both were incredibly enjoyable experiences and only solidified my desire to attend USNA. To be completely honest, I felt like NASS was a more valuable experience just because you can experience a USNA lifestyle for a longer period of time and you get a free chance to tryout/take the CFA, a required component of the application. Also during NASS, you get a preview of sea trials, a PT evolution that happens towards the end of the academic year for all plebes.

So I’ve been seeing some posts about having to choose between CVW and NASS if your CVW is scheduled for March/April. When did your Navy experiences occur? Also, you’re very lucky to have gotten invited to both, I’m hoping the same happens for me (fingers crossed).

@USNA2023NJ, great breakdown of the differences between NASS and CVW. Thoughtful appraisal for those considering both options.

Attendees should note that their impressions will be somewhat affected by their fellow participants. NASS tends to attract more “SA tire kickers” — those who aren’t sure about the option in general. Many learn quickly — and their peers recognize easily — that SA life isn’t for them. It’s just not a good fit. CVW tends to attract more “SA committeds” — those who know this path is for them but may be deciding between SAs. So the tone can be a bit more gung-ho.

A generalization, yes, but worth noting as one assesses the atmosphere and their potential classmates. DD made many friends at NASS, was impressed by most, unimpressed by a few. Some she thought were shoo-ins didn’t get in, and vice-versa. But all in all, a terrific experience.

Exactly my sentiments @USNA2023NJ and @MidCakePa. My current plebe loved the SS experience. It’s a more physical experience that a CVW. For sure a mini plebe summer. And peek into the academic side, and the kind of classes they can take as a Mid with the academic sessions offered during SS. DS thoroughly enjoyed it, called it a ‘top ten’ experience when he got home. HOWEVER, he was still on the fence USNA or NROTC until his later official visit (VERY similar to a CVW, but with his athletic team Mid, and a little longer than a CVW...). He wasn’t sure he could “do it” until this immersion into the student life experience. That visit is what sealed the deal for him! A happy ‘22 Plebe!

Honestly, had he not done that student life experience, I don’t think he would have had the confidence to say YES to USNA.

They are completely different experiences. I’m thankful DS was able to do both. NWW005, I have also read those offered CVW in March/April will have to choose if they are also offered SS. I don’t know that’s true or not. I would wait and see and then assess and decide. 1) you may not receive SS. 2) If you do, perhaps inquire if you can take a CVW if you still NEED it after SS (you may have your decision made after SS). You could email your admissions counselor and inquire about a CVW the Fall of your senior year. DS didn’t do his second visit until February his senior year. It used to be (as I have read on the forums) that CVW’s were only for seniors. So there is still time for you! Perhaps at SS you would even decide USNA isnt for you.

These are just my opinions...

If someone is sold on a SA experience then a CVW is probably a good fit. It really dives into what day to day life is really like. It lets you envision yourself in the halls and see if this is ‘right’. If someone is torn between multiple SAs, then a CVW is probably a good fit to compare and contrast. Summer Seminar is fun and it’s the first time many of these kids meet like minded very driven kids with similar goals. For many, they ‘find their people’. For those who have very little exposure to a SA, SS is a great program. Yes, it exposes someone to USNA, but it is not what day to day life is like as a Mid. 4 hours of mock sea trials is fun, but that is it. Plebe year is 25% of a Mids time at USNA. Plebe Summer is 6 weeks of a roughly 206 week program. For many they will be offered one or the other. For the few that ‘might have to choose’ think about what you want out of your experience, what questions you have, what are your concerns. Align those with what program is better for you and where you are in this journey.

Within the Admissions World, I've been told for several years now that USNA Admissions really wants to provide maximum chance to "kick the tires" at USNA to candidates both near and far. Candidates who live within a few hour drive include a region of VA, MD, WV,PA, DE, NJ along with some from surrounding states can pretty easily come and visit and many/most do so with or without NASS or CVW. Beyond that region, consider the cost and transport time involved in getting to personally see USNA and without overnight stays, etc it becomes pretty difficult for many to accomplish. They would like to use NASS as the primary vehicle to accomplish this and CVWs as necessary. Now I know that mid-Atlantic candidates still get to attend NASS but a personal data point from me is that I used to have 2 to 3 NASS attendees from my BGO schools per year and now its rare to see even 1 and I have the same schools now that I did then.

DD just got 2nd email informing her session plus details.
She attended CVW 01-24-26/19.

My daughter received an email as she was boarding the plane this morning for CVW. First email was acceptance followed by an email this afternoon that she is attending session 1.
