NASS Acceptance

It's so cool to see you all excited about NASS! I remember I had applied to NASS only because of Academy Day (I am from GA). I was only wishy washy going in to the whole thing, and I came out a different person. NASS truly changed my life and the direction I was headed as far a career path goes. And now I am posting this after finding out I've just gotten an appointment to the class of 2016. Good luck to everyone, and I hope you all get to have this experience! Also, I think GA just finds out early because I applied on the first day last year and I found out pretty fast. First piece of mail with the Dept. of the Navy letterhead out of MANY.:thumb:

I will be a detailer for NASS this year, and I went went back in 2010. If you guys have any questions about anything at all, let me know. It's a great time.

Call USNA or USMA. It may not be difficult at all for either of them to move you to another session. I took an Amtrak between USMA and USNA, and had an awesome two weeks.

Thanks! I contacted them and am going to get SLS moved to week 2. Gonna be a fun first 2 weeks of summer.

I understand the need to give little or no info and/or accomodation to the NASS applicants. I appreciate the task at hand for the admissions dept. The deliberate impression given is that everyone is treated the same.

DS wrote a nonpresumptuous request about the possibility, if accepted, of doing exactly what nuensis and alex1o1 are discussing. All he has gotten is a boilerplate response to wait like everyone else until May 1.

Not everyone is waiting until May 1. Sounds like many have already been informed and are already negotiating their week of attendance.

DS applied 12 hours after the app became available. It is not a leisurely drive for us to Annapolis. It will be even more complicated to do both NASS and USMA's SLS. SLS was very communicative and helpful, but no plans can be made nor plane tickets booked until he hears something from NASS, hoping that he got the week he asked for. All the while he waits, unable to make a committment to SLS, potentially losing his spot there. Or he guarantees a spot at SLS by paying $350, doesn't get the NASS week to make them both work and the $350 goes down a rathole since USNA is his first choice.

As he wrote to the USNA admissions department, many attendees will have a more difficult time than my DS making it work. That is the reason for having a set standard to follow. If there reason that some applicants are shown favor then admit it, give the reason why and let's move on.

There is zero resentment towards any applicant, simply wonderment at the process.

p.s. I did what I have always advised my kids. I wrote this last night in a moment of frustration and slept on it before sending it.

Would I need to get an official transcript from my school for NASS or do they not require it?

If it were me I would take the bird in the hand and hope it works out. If USNA doesn't come through then I'd plan a separate visit there. The travel plans can wait a while but I wouldn't let the slot he has slip out of his fingers. (I know I'm preaching to the choir). This whole process can be extremely frustrating. You're just encountering the tip of the iceberg. Get ready for a long ride for the next year.

The good part is that this experience confirms what I've always stressed to my kids, "you're entitled to nothing but your parents' love. So maximize every opportunity, earned or otherwise."

kinnen, that wet spot on your shoulder is my tears.

I was in the same situation, but I didn't want to risk not being able to go anywhere this summer so I accepted West Point. But I got the acceptance for NASS 2 weeks ago on the same date as SLS. I called West Point and they said it shouldn't be a problem to move me to week 2 and to just email them. I emailed them and they responded by saying there's no room, so as of now im on a waiting list for SLS week 2, and going to NASS week 1. So no, there isn't any real preference or special accomodation. I just spoke too soon, and im really hoping my $350 doesn't go down the "rathole"

Sound advice. Experience the SA that accepts you. Then try to ask for a Candidate Visit Weekend (or equivalent) to the SA you didn't go to in the summer or as kinnem said, do an alternate visit. And brace yourself for the rollercoaster ride ahead!

alex,

Hang in there and best of luck.

Too bad we start an aftermarket. This thing would be resolved in about two seconds. We'd trade our 2nd week SLS for your 1st week NASS and take our chances with waitlisting 2nd week SLS...and pay you $50.

Do anyone have any clue when the next traunch of NASS acceptance letters goes out?

DS just got this email this AM.

Dear West Point candidate,

According to my system, our SLS team has offered you a spot at our Summer Leader Seminar but we have not gotten an answer from you yet. The offer you received has a deadline on it and for many people this deadline is April 1st.

Be advised that if our SLS team does not get your acceptance back by your published deadline, they will withdraw your offer.

SLS attendance has no impact on our eventual admissions decision. We run it to help give you a preview of what being a cadet might be like. If you cannot make it to SLS, please let the team know.

**Please note I do not deal directly with SLS admissions. I am sending this note as a courtesy reminder because I’d like to see as many of you at SLS as possible. You should communicate with the SLS Team directly at SLS@usma.edu

It is unfortunate that DS has to hold a spot which could be offered to another deserving kid, while waiting for a letter which was sent weeks ago to other kids.

FYI - They have extended the deadline for SS until April 7th. So far 1550 invites have been sent out of the 2250 spots. So 700 more kids will get picked. Not sure why they extended the SS application another week?

Nice! More opaqueness.

Glad DS is a Zen Master unlike his hotheaded old man.

Congrats to all you guys who have already been accepted to NASS!! I put in my application two days after window opened and haven't heard yet. Still hoping!

I'm a US citizen living overseas. Does anyone have any thought/experience on acceptance to SS if you live abroad?

Hopeful,

I'm hopeful for you too, bud.

The mantra is always that NASS is in no way a determining factor in the admissions process.

Take them at their word because, as I 've said many times there are many others for whom attendance to NASS or SLS is a much greater burden that it is for my DS.

He doesn't have to miss school, spray corn, pick vegetables, farrow hogs or cross oceans during high tourist season.

Found out this weekend i got accepted to NASS Second session, anyone else in 2nd session?

I would like to get an update on the information you posted. Who was your POC at the Academy? Also, do you know if this is a rolling acceptance and, if so, how many times are they going to be sending out letters and when is the next scheduled? Do you know the cutoff date of the original group that received letters? I believe that the letters were postmarked March 4th so I assume that the cutoff date must have been the first week in February. Please confirm.
