NASS Application Question

I am in the process of completing my NASS Application and am a little confused. Under the "Education" section where I provide school name, test scores, class rank, etc., there is a "Remarks or Additional Comments: (Limited to 2000 Characters)" section. My first thought would be that it is for Leadership, EC's, stuff like that, but there is a section for that later on that is limited to 1000 characters. Even the personal statement is limited to only 1000 characters.

I know that I shouldn't leave the 2000 character response blank, but what should I be putting in there? Describe what kind of school I go to? add more about EC's (1000 characters isn't a lot of space to thoroughly describe multiple EC's/Leadership Positions/Community Service/Clubs/etc.)? Any guidance/thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I left it blank. Reading this makes me second guess my application

I left it blank last year and got in so don't worry about it. Just be brief with your EC's in the space provided and pick the ones most important to you and highlight who you are best.

What I think that space is for is so that if you have a low rank, low test scores, one bad grade, or something in your education that could be a red flag, you explain it in that space.

I thought of this more as if you had to explain something along the lines of "my school hasn't updated class rank" or something out of your control. I left it blank last year and I got in

Does anyone know the typical amount of applications that are submitted for NASS?

No one here knows exact numbers, but there are 2,550 total slots. Seeing as though the USAFA SS gets around 6,000 applications for 1,000 slots, I'd assume that NASS accumulates a similar amount of applications, seeing as though most people apply to all three of the SA's Summer Seminars. Because of this, chances of being accepted to NASS seem statistically higher due to having more slots. Again, I don't know for sure, but this is my educated guess. Best of luck.

If you haven't yet submitted your application, I would suggest not leaving it blank unless there is absolutely nothing you can put in there. For example, I used this space to give a brief description of my school, my performance in class, academic achievements, and how I estimated my class rank (my school doesn't rank its students, so I had to explain what I based my guess on). You can also use this space to talk about test scores and your classes Given that the application has provided space for 2000 characters, I would recommend at least using some of them to give a better picture of who you are academically. Hope this helps, and good luck!

The NASS application instructions explain the purpose of the remarks section: "Accurately list the grades you have received in the classes listed. If you are currently taking any of these, provide the grade you hold right now or realistically anticipate. Check the corresponding box marked “IB/AP/H” if you are taking any of these classes at the honors, AP, or baccalaureate level. If you have received a “D” or “F” in any of these classes, answer “C” but explain in the remarks section."

That is the only guidance provided for the section.

While statistics suggest that chances of getting into NASS are greater than getting into USAFA Summer Seminar, keep in mind that, in this case, you shouldn't read too much into that. My son applied to both, was chosen for USAFA Summer Seminar (but not NASS), and ultimately received an appointment to USNA (which was his first choice) , but not to USAFA. Go figure....
