So, for the essay question on the NASS application, since it's similar to the USAFA SS one my answer is relatively the same(asking for the reasons for attending the seminar) Would using portions from my USAFA application be inappropriate?

I am going to be blunt....you're already looking for a short cut? hmmm.....my son spent HOURS on essays for NASS, Boy's State, Congressional and Senatorial apps, the USNA app and all the ROTC apps too. Just be careful. This is a life you're considering not just college. I'm sure I'll get push back on this but your heart must be in this 10,000 % This process is not for the weak of heart.

Totally understood. I'm swriting the thing completely separate, I just wasn't sure if it'd be looked badly upon having similar essays to both(given that my honest answer to the questions are practically the same.)

Here is the push back you were expecting. Plagiarism doesn't apply to your own writing. You will have a great deal of writing to do during this process. Be thoughtful and edit carefully. Reuse as appropriate, and be sure not to use the name of the wrong academy.

I don't want to be rude or crass....I just know my son killed himself during this process and it paid off. Each essay and each opportunity are unique and should be treated as just important as the last thing. It's an awful unnatural process and you will be worn out if you don't quit first. Know this....this is about service first. Best of luck and God bless.

It's perfectly fine. Good luck!

I think it's fine to use parts of your essays in other essays. It's YOUR intellectual property. In doing so, you will likely craft the perfect essay when the real applications roll around. Just remember, there are unique differences in the summer programs, so make sure you elaborate why you want to attend each. Proofread carefully to make sure each essay is service specific.

The programs aren't going to compare notes. If the question is the same and your answer is the same for both schools, then the same essay is fine.

I think MomofMod makes a good point, though. In the college/SA application process, there are lots of essays. The questions can be similar but may not be identical and the answers may differ depending on who asks the question. Thus, as you progress through the process, be sure to assess and answer each question/topic on its own merits and resist the urge to "cut and paste." I can tell you that those who read LOTS of essays, such as SA Admissions, nom committees, etc., can tell whether something was "borrowed" or" re-purposed." It's allowed as long as it's still your own work -- but suggests laziness, lack of attention to detail, etc.
