Our DS was wait listed for NASS summer of 2016 (applying for Class of 2021). He thought it was a reflection on his potential candidacy but after talking to a BGO, we understood that there was a lot more to NASS than it being for potential officers. More often than not, the NASS is for the demographic that is either under-served/under-exposed or has no idea what the SA is all about. After all, our DS had done a camp there, we did visit and go on a tour, so there was some exposure. It's also a way for the SA to determine if someone, who's metrics may look favorable on paper, has the potential for other aspects needed to be an officer. Maybe he/she is a great student, but doesn't have the physical aptitude or leadership (or as former USNA/Navy Seal Coleman Ruiz would say "followership") capability necessary. It will, however, either reinforce a candidates decision (positively or negatively) or possibly influence admissions for some of those other folks. I promise you that the kids at NASS are watched/judged/scored the entire time. Subsequently, be assured that acceptance to the NASS has absolutely no bearing on acceptance to USNA because our DS was appointed in December a week after his MOC nomination.
