Didn't know this was a thing for NASS, only more for admissions. Anyone have experience with this? DS is worried if he doesn't opt out and then can't take the spot if it is offered last minute, it will look bad for him. After this and a turndown for Inspire and a BGO coordinator ghosting him (he is homeschooled so was trying to find out who he would be assigned to) his confidence is pretty shaken. Just trying to offer any words of encouragement I can.

None of those programs are competitively selected. His confidence should not be shaken! They are recruiting, spread the word about USNA type programs. Getting the most bang for the buck (limited spots) type thing. An applicant won’t even have their resume completely built, or standardized tests taken. Those programs are self reported grades. And no one has any clue who will be on slates at this point.

Don’t worry. At all. MOST who are appointed have not attended either program. And yes a waitlist makes sense. And no, if he cannot attend last minute, he won’t be dinked. What NASS shows a BGO, is familiarity with USNA. And that can be gained in many ways. Including websites and YouTube videos (for example).

As far as BGO ghosting? It’s super early in the cycle. There is turnover and reassignment occurring. Idk if that’s the issue or not, but it is early. Is there something he needs to ask, that BGO’s here could answer?

None of this matters.. there are plenty of kids who never apply for NASS or had any contact with USNA, etc, before this point in Junior Year who get into USNA. Acceptance to NASS is not a measure of how bad USNA wants you...the purpose of the program is awareness, and the kid who has wanted to go to USNA his/her entire life is not the target audience.

What is the story with BGO ghosting ? Next years candidates aren't even on our radar screen yet... we don't see the next year candidates until late June /July...and even then, the Area Coordinator has the option of reassigning for variety of reasons. SOme schools have an assigned BGO --but usually there are not enough BGO's to go around, and the AC has to assign BGO's to Candidates on an ad hoc basis. Of course, if a Candidate has a question before being formally assigned --he /she can reach out to their Area Coordinators (contact info is available at USNA.edu, and the AC will then field the quesiton or assign the Candidate to a nearby BGO.

My DS was turned down (not waitlisted), but he has attended a sports camp and CVW so he does understand in a limited way what it's like. He was also turned down for Inspire. He did not submit any standardized test scores and is color deficient, so wondering if that was the reason why he was not selected? Regardless, after reading what others have stated, we are not concerned. He will complete his application as soon as he can in an effort to get ahead of the waiver which we already know he needs and can take some time.

Nothing to do with standard test score for sure -- DS has SAT 1580 and was turned down. He got West Point's SLE though but was not able to attend.

It could be a good investment of his time to contact Admissions, let them know he has a color vision deficiency, that he understands a waiver would be required and only a handful are given, but ask what Navy warfare communities are closed to him even if he gets a waiver for color vision.

Color vision DQs work a bit differently. Otherwise fully qualified applicants with noms in this situation, if offered an appointment, are briefed on what communities will be open to them and which are closed. If he has dreams of being a Navy pilot, that will not be an open path. Ditto Marine air, and some of the other line warfare communities. Admissions, his primary source, is best situated to tell him what is off the table and what could be on the table (Intel, etc.). This is critical info for his decision-making.

Yes that is an excellent recommendation, I will share this recommendation with him. He does know that the he will be limited to restricted-line positions and he is okay with that if he is offered a nomination. He has been communicating with a coach for several months and "thinks" he will be a supported athletic recruit. The coach has known about his CV since last summer when he attended the sports camp. We shared that information upfront, as there was no reason to send him to camp if he would not ever be able to attend and serve. This is something we would not have dangled in front of him if wasn't ever possible. So everyone knows, except he has not reached out to Admissions, so that is a great suggestion. Thank you!
