NASS

Air Force also does another invitation for those who did not get AFSS at a later date.

You might want to seek out your American Legion and ask if they would support you wirh a scholarship. My son did this last year and they paid for half of the tuition. When he got back he went to a meeting and thanked them for the experience and shared with him what he learned at NASS. There are lots of supportive groups in your communities that may be willing to support you. Doesn't hurt to research and ask.

...or gamble and not get either and apply for CVW at USNA.

The Candidate Visit Weekend (CVW) is an invite-only proposition. You don't apply, and the only real cost is travel.
For High School seniors, invites are extended to certain qualified candidates who have completed 50% of their application.

I heard that USNA is offering CVW invites to H.S. Juniors now, as well.
I don't know how they know who to send the invites to (since Juniors haven't opened an application yet), but they do.

My DD was invited to CVW; she was also selected to summer STEM in her freshman year. When she applied for NASS I let her know that because of her already expressed interest the odds on attending NASS were slim. I was right. The important thing is you are applying yourself and showing interest. They can’t take everyone; however, your application alone is enough to show that you are interested.
My DD was bummed but she attended their rowing camp so that made her happy

My DD attended the rowing camp -last week of June 2017 with Coach Joe S’s Boat. She absolutely loved it. She will go back same week 2018 & plans to apply for Class of 2023. Unfortunately, we live in NoVa - so tough district to get Congressional nom:(

How do you check your NASS portal?
There's no portal to check, you just have to wait for an email. You don't get a portal with USNA until you become an official candidate (it's different for some of the other service academies, like USCGA, where you get a portal immediately).

Moswimmer66,

Does your DD row in HS with a competitive program and is she interested in rowing at the D1 level. Get to your 10th post and send me a PM.

can't figure out how to send you a private email and my DD would kill me if I revealed who she is - suffice it to say - she is a member of a competitive HS rowing program in Northern Virginia. She is currently a HS Junior. She is only applying to D1 rowing schools or schools with highly competitive rowing programs (ie UVA girls is D1; boys is club due to Title IX). She is also looking into WP - although crew is club at WP. She applied to WP SLE as well. At least she could do the CFA at WP and get that out, experience a SA, etc. if she gets into WP SLE

You need 10 posts. Please do not reveal anything personal; no worries. When you hit 10 posts you can send the PM.

Erg score is going to be critical for college coaches. If you can get some video at a regatta of her skillset also very helpful. Is she stern pair, engine room (6,5,4,3 seat) or bow pair. Can she row port and starboard, very helpful if she can. If she is stroke this is a leadership position think of it as the quarterback of the boat. Yes, the Cox is calling the shots; however, they all follow the stroke. Get to 10 posts.
Very important crew is a small community the college coaches all know each other “very well”. There are colleges that have rowing programs much like USNA where they bring in other college coaches to help. Hope some of this helps.

Is it a problem for NASS if I haven't applied yet? I really want to go, and I was going to apply as soon as the application opened. However, when I talked with my school's college counselor about it, she said that I had to wait until I got my first semester grades, so that if the Naval Academy has any questions about my grades they can see all of them on the official transcript. The reason this would be important is that my school doesn't rank students and the college counselor told me not even to try and estimate my rank. She told me just to put my GPA compared with the highest and lowest GPA in the grade. Also my English grade is really on the line with regards to whether it is an A- or a B+, since according to the NASS application it is an A (90.44), but according to my school it is a B+. My school only counts 90.5 and above as an A-.

Apply... This is NASS and not the full blown candidate application. Your fine!

To all parents and candidates..... Pack light in a very large oversized bag!!! You will be accumulating a lot of new clothing. Like a hockey bag is great. You really need the extra room....a lot of room. I hope I just got the extra room point across.

Place Holders:
1. Bring a plastic garbage bag, you will have wet items coming home.
2. If you want to keep your very muddy / stained new attire wash them “MANY” times over & over & over. Most important do not dry them between washes just keep them in the washer until you “THINK” you have exhausted every effort to clean them.

The effort works; its been 5 years since my DS attended and my DD now has all of his NASS attire.
My DS #2 has all my DS #1 NASS attire. My DS #1 is now 3C at USCGA and only wears CG clothing.

Is it a problem for NASS if I haven't applied yet? I really want to go

My DS decided to apply to NASS when we visited spring break of his junior year. He filed his application the end of March for the only week he had available to go.

He was waitlisted mid April but received an invitation a couple of weeks later.

His NASS experience moved Navy to his first choice ahead of West Point and he’s now on the downhill slide of his plebe year.

Nice, retaining the NASS attire. USCGA.... directly across the river from the sub base and next door neighabors to Connecticut College. It’s still a little chilly up here but not too bad things are starting to turn.

DS will be attending NASS in June. I see they run them through the CFA while they are there. Will this be counted as an official score or is it just for them to experience the test?
