NASS

This will count as the official score. They are able to retake it later though if they don’t do well.

Yes, it will count as an official score. I can't emphasize enough how important it is to do well on it during NASS, so applicant doesn't have to retake it later. It relieves so much stress and pressure during the rest of the application process knowing this is completed! Both my girls decided to retake it because they couldn't do a pull up during NASS. They weren't satisfied with settling for the flexed arm hang, so they worked hard, retook it in the summer and managed to eek out 3-4 pull-ups. They had to contact USNA to ask them to reset their CFA so the new scores could be entered. In hind-sight they wish they would have worked harder before NASS and nailed the pull ups then.

I second what falconchic88 said. Do your best by physically being fit for the summer. Practice the CFA in correct sequence as given in the guideline. For females to have 4+ pull-ups is impressive. If you’re a male, run time is key as this is where most redo have to improve. Males have to run less than 8 min for a mile run. But most competitive males run 6-7 minutes on a mile run. Stick to SA Average as a guide. My DS began with 3 pull-ups at home before the summer. He bought a pull up bar and practiced everyday. He did 16 at home and did 16 Pull Ups at the summer program and passed the CFA. But decided to redo and submitted a better score in August. He maxed out on most events including doing 18 pull ups. So making significant improvement is very possible with practice and being fit!

You will have to keep up your fitness all throughout the Academy or you can be asked to leave. In a very rare cases I heard people are let go from the Academy and from the service due to not being physically fit for service.

DS will be attending NASS in June. I see they run them through the CFA while they are there. Will this be counted as an official score or is it just for them to experience the test?
My DS passed his CFA while at NASS last year and was "one and done". It was nice to have that piece of the file completed, and he was glad he had spent a bit of time preparing for it. He didn't go crazy, but made sure he was familiar with all the components and that he could put a decent numbers on the board.

I believe they can use it or let a coach or someone at school test them to get a better score...

My DS didn’t get accepted to NASS and was told the same thing. It is a tool to help USNA reach those who may not be familiar with the Academy or are not certain if they want to attend. Trust the process. My DS got his call on Friday from our MOC he was accepted for the classic 2022.

Thanks everyone. He took a baseline test yesterday with his baseball hitting coach who also does fitness training. It was much an eye opener!

He's 6' 155 lbs.
His results were:
Basketball throw 60'
Pull ups 9
Shuttle run 9.5 sec
Crunches 36
Push ups 40
Mile run 7 min 45 sec.

Coach is confident with practice and strength training he will greatly improve. He also did this at 1pm without eating anything yet for the day (poor choice) and a cold front blew in so it was super cold for the run. Anyway, we've set up for him to formally train with the coach twice a week and do "homework" daily and then re-test monthly. We look forward to seeing better numbers next month.

My DS received his NASS acceptance email last year on March 29. I remember picking him up, he was so happy and thrilled by the experience. And hungry!

If the money for the people accepted into NASS 2018 in January was due February 9th, does this mean that there is a little chance or even no chance at all for me to still be accepted into SS?

We didn’t have to pay until after we heard he was accepted so I don’t know about anything being due February 9th.

EDIT: I just checked the email from last March. Our NASS tuition was due APRIL 9th.

There will still be folks who will be accepted. To my knowledge, applications are still open. Remember that each week of NASS has a certain capacity. My guess is they are sending out acceptances to a group of folks to see what they get in terms of acceptances and for which sessions. Based on that, they will make more offers. Some people may apply to multiple SA summer programs and will have to turn down one or more. Or they do Boys/Girls state. Or some other reason. It's an evolving process.

As you will see from those who applied last year, at the end of the process, some will be WL'ed and a decent number of those may ultimately end up with an invitation. Some of those who are not offered NASS may well be offered CVWs either this spring or next fall. That's another great opportunity to see USNA.

What exactly is CVW and how is it different from attending NASS?

The Candidate Visit Weekend ("CVW") is for rising high school juniors. Attendees are assigned to shadow a plebe for the wknd, including living in Bancroft Hall.

Naval Academy Summer Seminar ("NASS") is a week-long camp, that focuses more on the physical aspects of midshipman life. It is for rising high school seniors.

I would describe the difference between the two programs as the CVW helps a candidate understand the Academy from an academic and student life perspective while NASS helps a candidate understand the Academy from a squad / physical / military perspective.

Attending both provides a full idea of what you would be signing up for, helping you make a fully informed decision about applying to USNA. However, there is absolutely no correlation between attending either and securing the privilege of an Appointment.

From the application page: "The application will be open until 11:59.59 pm EST on March 31, 2018" so any time up to and just after that date.

Some applicants were notified on 1/30, but I haven’t heard of any acceptances since.

There was also a wave of acceptances last week (Feb. 6th I think?). A few of my Summer STEM friends got accepted.

I applied on the 15th and am yet to hear anything, along with the USMA SS. I’m from CT, hopefully we’ll hear soon!
