NASS

For those who don't hear today, do not panic. Some folks hear early, others hear late.

Also, we say this every year, but it's true and thus bears repeating: NASS is a RECRUITING TOOL. The primary goal is to provide exposure to USNA to young men and women who come from schools or areas of the country where USNA is not well known or where not many have attended USNA. Even if the person who attends NASS isn't super qualified, the hope is that he/she will have a great time and go back to his/her community and talk up USNA, thus encouraging others to look into the school. As a result, the "most qualified" folks (who may come from areas/schools that historically do very well with USNA) may not be accepted to NASS while someone with "lesser" qualifications is.

As difficult as it may seem, if you're not accepted to NASS, do not despair. You may still have an excellent shot at USNA -- most successful candidates did not do NASS. Also, if you are turned down for NASS, consider requesting a CVW this spring (when they target juniors) as that is an equally beneficial experience.

I hope to get in but the handful of folks I know already at SA's did not get in to any of the summer programs at the SA's. I am sure there is a correlation but it is not absolute.

Definitely! DS is excited though because older brother sets a high standard and its an internal family competition. DD is about to graduate from USAFA and didn't attend any of the summer seminars.

Yes, he absolutely should be excited. I would be for sure. Also, I should have said it in my first post...Congratulations to him!!

Nevertheless recruiting tool or not, it must be super exciting to get selected and do NASS and other SA Summer Programs. When my DS got turned down for NASS he was very disappointed and thought Navy didn’t want him. And he was living abroad at the time, near APO. But he recovered after going to SLE and AFSS. Ironically, he received his Appointment from USNA first.

So it will all work out in the end folks. He’s doing CVW in Feb as a Senior. Enjoy the summer fun! You’ll make friends and come to conclusion that you want to serve in uniform, which ever one that maybe.

My DS got his notification into NASS right before Good Friday last year. I thought that was a long wait last year. Nothing to waiting to hear about an appointment. DS had an amazing experience last summer.

Do applications are still being accepted until March 31, correct? Acceptance letters would probably still be sent through most of April then?

I just got back from CVW and I learned from my Midshipmen that I stayed with that NASS is 100% a geographical recruiting tool. They called it "Summer Scam-inar" because it's a tool to show Academy life in a fully positive way, hiding some of the struggles of being a midshipman. NASS is a great opportunity and I am in no way discrediting it, but as others have said, it's a recruiting tool, so don't fret if you can't go!

Does anyone really know whether the midshipman that you are assigned to actually does some kind of written review of your performance during NASS. I've read differing opinions on this in various threads, and thought (based on all experiences here), that it would be clearly yes or no? Or might it differ based on the year/session you attend? (if it is done, how much it counts in the admission process is another, maybe more difficult question).

DS said he received a review by his leader. I can’t imagine that you wouldn’t be evaluated. It may be a ‘check the box’ vs a written type review. Always assume you are being evaluated, IMO, because you probably are.

I will add to this discussion: while it is a USNA recruiting tool, it was also something that at least one of DS’s nominating sources told him that attending weighed favorably in their selecting him for receiving a nomination (he ultimately received 3). She stated that it showed his interest level, dedication and determination to attend the academy.

To all parents and candidates..... Pack light in a very large oversized bag!!! You will be accumulating a lot of new clothing. Like a hockey bag is great. You really need the extra room....a lot of room. I hope I just got the extra room point across.

Place Holders:
1. Bring a plastic garbage bag, you will have wet items coming home.
2. If you want to keep your very muddy / stained new attire wash them “MANY” times over & over & over. Most important do not dry them between washes just keep them in the washer until you “THINK” you have exhausted every effort to clean them.

The effort works; its been 5 years since my DS attended and my DD now has all of his NASS attire.

I was accepted to NASS yesterday :), but the due date for turning in registration and payment is FEB 9th. Since NASS is my second choice (behind AFASS) and I won't be able to travel to/afford both, I don't want to commit to attending NASS before I get my AFASS decision. Any advice?

Call USAFA and tell them your situation. If they need time and don’t want to gamble take the NASS. Or gamble and not get neither and apply for CVW at USNA.
