After receiving TWE for the USMA class of 2022 I am reapplying for the class of 2023. Currently, I am in the process of enlisting in the Army National Guard as an 11x/11b and plan to attend OSUT at Benning throughout the Fall semester (August-December) before taking classes at the local university in the Spring to further bolster my academic portfolio of AP classes, 4.0 GPA, and 30 ACT. Additionally, I was deemed 3Q for the class of 2022 and received TWE in late May. When speaking with my FFR we discussed enlisting into the service as a way to increase my WCS, primarily if I was to attain leadership positions throughout OSUT, and as an opportunity to receive a service-connected nomination regarding the 85 slots for reserve/national guard soldiers that are rumored to go partly unfilled. My FFR informed me that my Basic/OSUT company commander would be eligible to complete the commander's endorsement part of the nomination and stated he himself had done the same during his time as a basic training company commander for who he believed to be promising soldiers of USMA material.

I was wondering if anyone would have any tips or experience with this kind of approach and particularly (increasing) the likelihood of earning a commander's endorsement while at OSUT.

On a side note if anyone may know if I receive an enlistment bonus such as the quick ship for leaving within so many days or for the length of contract and receive an appointment to USMA are those to be recouped by the Army entirely or based on their obligation being fulfilled, such as the quick ship?

Thank you.

Wouldnt it make more sense to attend a four year college and take the equivalent courses there while going through Rotc. I mean if you were to go to high end engineering school for example and get great grades and do well at Rotc, that would show that you could handle the academic and military challenges of USMA

Enlisting won’t necessarily increase your WCS score unless you earn some military honors. Starting your basic commander, your AIT, or your unit commander nominate you. With your stats, a soldier nomination should get you an appointment.

USMA appointment trumps all other military obligations.

I’m somewhat inclined to believe that since the portal showed my rejection at the end of May it was a “down to the wire” situation possibly? With the predominant belief among my RC, FFR, and Liaison that a good amount of slots for prior-service applicants go unfilled versus the 5-10 for ROTC/JROTC the enlistment option seems enticing as a break from the traditional back to school cycle but not a gap year in addition to a higher chance of an appointment if nominated by a commander with consideration for USMAPS too.
I am more than willing as well to complete the service obligation in hand with ROTC to earn a US Army officer commision if I were not appointed to USMA 2023 as my father did the same through the Army Reserve SMP program before going AD.
