National pool questions?

Hello all,

My DD did not win her slate. I know this from previous posts on this forum. We live in a very competitive district in southern California and she was only able to obtain a Congressional nomination as our two Senators never responded back to her Nomination requests.

My questions after reading older posts on the subject are 1) Does anyone know if admissions considers the number of appointees from a particular congressional district when appointing from the National pool? 2) When does admissions start making appointments from the National pool?

I understand that these questions might not have an answer.

Thanking you in advance.

Slate winners can change throughout the "charging" process, so even if you are correct right now, that may not be true in weeks/months from now.

I realize this is somewhat of a moot point....but did your DD fill out the applications for each Senator nomination OR just send a letter stating her interest/requesting an application? I'm almost certain that ALL MOCs post their application and instructions to their websites on house.gov/senate.gov.

1) Does anyone know if admissions considers the number of appointees from a particular congressional district when appointing from the National pool?

At some level yes, because they can't have half the state coming from one district (CA, obviously, has many districts), but there isn't "hard" quotas. The number coming from the national pool for a specific state/district would, most likely, be heavily influenced by the geography of those already offered appointments.

2) When does admissions start making appointments from the National pool?

This is normally towards the end...so it depends on how quickly Admissions gets through slates and other nominating sources...but typically this is late March and into April.

Your answers are very helpful in understanding the process. I thank you for that.

Yes. She did fill out all the paperwork for the Senators according to the instructions provided and she heard nothing but crickets.

Thanks again.

Your welcome. CA, being a very large state, and with quite a few military concentration areas makes obtaining a Senatorial nomination extremely difficult.

My understanding is CA does not like to double nominate since there are so many applicants. Since your daughter received a congressional nomination that might be why you didn't hear anything from the senators. My son (class of 2020) was the same way as were others we know who also received congressional nominations and eventually appointments.

Thanks Socal. I appreciate your response. In reference to eventual appointments are you suggesting from the National pool? If so, were the appointments made in March April? Happy new year to you and yours.

NY2CA5...curious, how have you reached the conclusion that your DD did not win her slate?

Truenorth.. I noticed an appointment from her Congressional District under the appointment thread. I am assuming there are typically only one in any given year.

Also she did, in fact, secure a nomination from a very competitive district; that is an accomplishment that many qualified candidates didn't receive. You have to be in it to win it, so she may receive an appointment direct, or go into the pool. Sometimes offers are made the last week before in-processing, but you have to have that nomination. Wishing her all the best.

Sorry, did not check back in until now. Who knows how/where they come from, it doesn't really matter in the end does it? I do know there are several from the same competitive district that are now at the Academy, at least three or four that I know of. Don't sweat the details, like someone else said, just because one appointment has come out of your district doesn't mean there can't/won't be more. In our case one that I know of was a reapply who didn't get in the prior year, another was a first time applicant who didn't hear until rather late in the process (late spring) and mine had a LOA with the nomination being the last thing he was waiting for, once he was one of those named by the congressman we had our appointment within days. We were lucky to know in December, I'm sure waiting is not fun.
