My daughter received a letter from this organization today. It states that she has been nominated to attend this NYLF/Nation Security forum in the fall in Washington DC. Does anyone have any information on this organization? It states it a great forum for the SA? My daughter will be attending Girls State this summer and not sure if this would also look positive for the USNA application. Any suggestions?

I don't know much about NYLF, but I think you'll find Girls/Boys State is looked upon very favorably. My son and 2 of his classmates, who are also going to SAs, all went to Boys State. And a girl from our same HS, who is at USNA now, went to Girls State. Others here have recommended attending Girls/Boys State before attending any of the SA's summer seminar programs.
Cheers...

If you search around the net, you will find a number of discussion topics on the NYLF. Paying to attend a seminar sent out in mass mailings is certainly NOT an example of leadership one would put on their Academy resume and the so-called 'selection critieria' is meant to imply there is some prestige associated with being invited. Mostly these are money-making efforts for those who run them. Many indicate the invite goes right into the trash like any other junk mail.

Many of the comments by those who attended indicate it was little more than an expensive (or often poorly run) field trip.

NYLF is nothing like Boys/Girls state which have a solid reputation, valid selection criteria and CAN be counted as an example of leadership during your aplication process.

DO NOT DO IT!! I went to NYLF/NS. It was pretty much a really expensive trip to DC. You do not learn anything, and the speakers are quite boring. They advertise all these trips that you can go on, and all these amazing speakers that they will have; but when you actually get there, most trips are restricted, and some even canceled, and the speakers are not the same as in the brochure.

Boys/girls state, on the other hand, is a wonderful thing and much more worth the time; but summer seminar is by far the best for total experience. How the SAs look at it, I have no clue.

But, if you wanted a ranking from someone who did all three, I would say:

1. Summer Seminar
2. Boys/Girls State
...
99. NYLF/NS.

Hope it helps!

More than likely if you have to pay to put something one your resume, it isn't worth it.

Boy's/Girl's State is usually sponsored to where you pay a portion. Also, you must be selected.

I gotten those NYLF things in the mail and never bothered with them. Honestly, everyone gets them- not selective.

I was invited last year. It seemed like a lot of fun for its own sake, but the advice that came down from my BGOs was that I should just go to NASS, spend less money, and come out of it more competitive. For what it's worth, I got an LoA without it.

I would make the suggestion of Boy's/Girl's State coming before summer seminar. Attending Boy's/Girl's State will help you get into an SA/get nominations. On the other hand, attending summer seminar really does not have a bearing on helping a candidate get in. It is more of an opportunity for a candidate to explore/learn about that SA.

Thank you! Girls State, Summer Seminar and her National TSA competition in TN were all overlapping. She made the decision to attend Girls State. Her project for the National TSA was with another girl so she will present the project and still have a chance to win a National Title for TSA also. I'm assuming TSA programs are looked upon as a great program to put on the application.

It's like paying to have your name appear in one of those "Who's Who in ..." books.
