Hello! I am currently a Junior and I am expected to graduate in the spring of 2022. I was wondering how much of an effect would a sport affect my chance of admissions. I am currently on an academy team playing soccer and I would say I am currently at a high skill level. Could this have a possible impact on my chances of admission?

Seems like you’re asking whether being a high-level athlete might have a positive effect on your admission decision. If so, the answer is that it depends.

USNA soccer is a Division 1 program. So if you’re already being recruited — or being shown interest — by D1 schools, then that indicates you may be at the skill level to play at USNA. Then the question is whether the rest of your record — academics, leadership — warrant USNA’s attention.

Coaches seem to have some pull at SAs. But that’s generally reserved for the biggest sports and the best athletes. So again, how that affects you, depends.

Go to the USNA website and read every page, link, dropdown and tab. You can also try connecting with the coaching staff. Both angles here will give you a better idea of where you stand.

Generally, the folks for whom the Sport will help pull them in are the folks who are All State or at least All-County (or similar) in their respective areas. This is by no means a universal truth but from what I've seen, if you aren't getting significant recognition at a level beyond your individual school, you probably are not recruitment material. Your mileage may vary, feel free to send video and stats to the coaches to see if they are interested.

Academy team? ( a type of high level national soccer developmental program? )

If so the OP is very likely at least a moderately high level player. Beyond normal HS team. And USNA more a mid level D1 program.

Recruiting period will be one of the most stressful periods of your life and likely for your parents as well.

By all means , let the coaches know who you are , and that you are interested in at least considering. Have your current coaches talk you up

Make the job of the recruiter as easy as you can. It’s a very stressful very busy time for the coaches.

Will being a moderately high level soccer player, on an academy level team , give you an edge in admissions ——assuming no major red flags——somewhat good solid grades and SATs—-decent and good not walk on water great—-without question.

But with decent SATs and decent grades in college prep courses not great grades and SATs you are likely looking at a year at the Prep school. Where they have a soccer team with other USNA recruits and a coach.

NAPS or direct admit if you are a good better than average player, academy level, you have a better than average chance. It will depend a lot on your self assessment of “high skill level”.

Good Luck

If I understand your graduating year correctly your recruiting period started this September this fall? Not sure if the dates changed because of covid

Call or email the soccer office directly. Ask to speak to any of the coaches. Or the recent USNA grad working with the soccer team.

Make a strong pitch.

If you have already been in touch then again good luck.

I hate to say it, but junior year is very late in the soccer recruiting process. Unless this person is an absolute stud/studette on the field they are a long shot to be recruited after their sophomore year.
You are on an academy team, so that helps. I’ve only heard of one high school only player making a D1 team recently and she was a beast.
This does not mean they can’t make the team as a walk on, but they probably won’t get much help in the admission process.
Even as a walk on, however, they want to contact the coach and be an “invited walk on” so the coaches know to look for them. But the OP needs their academy coach to contact the USNA coach and be involved in the process. Coaches get hundreds of emails every day from players.

What we can’t tell from this person if they are being recruited at all by anyone. If not then soccer is doubtful to help much for the USNA.

But I knew a youngster that was being recruited by a lot of schools and none of them Navy. Then they got a mailing from USNA soccer November of their senior year in HS.

They were off to naps 8 months later.

I do think, however, that there is a difference between not being recruited and not being recruited by USNA. If they are not being recruited at all it will be an uphill fight.
I am NOT trying to rain on anyone’s parade or trying to say they don’t have a chance. Plenty of walk-ons have made D1 teams and done well. My DD was not recruited and was blown off by USNA and USMA. They pretty much told her she wouldn’t even make it as a walk-on. She went to a D1 school better ranked than those teams and not only made the team as a walk on but played more than any other freshman in her position, started several games, and had several assists as a wing back. Of course she then walked away from college and the game and enlisted... but that’s a different set of gray hairs.
