Naval Academy Summer Seminar 2009

Don't Give Up The Ship

.... In their way of trying to make me feel better, the admissions guy said that they had so many great applicants and not enough spots for the session I chose (I listed that I could only attend the last one, it's not my fault that my school is still in session during the first two). He also said that only about a third of the people accepted for summer seminar actually get into the academy for the next class. However, that still would have been a third better chance than before to get in. Eh, whatever. I started my ROTC scholarship applications (my original plan for commission) so hopefully things will work out...

Many folks, including my dd, do not get into NASS yet get into USNA and graduate. NASS has differing standards than admissions. NASS acceptance is skewed towards those folks who have less chance of otherwise visiting the academy. There IS a geographic bias.

This forum is replete with threads giving information on how to make your application package its best. Use those.

There is no more important time in your HS career than NOW. You still have part of Sem 6, AP exams, plus sem 6 exams. Hit the academics hard, now.

Do not get disheartened. Give it your best shot.

Congratulations on the Eagle Scout. We have two scouts - 1 Eagle and 1 Star (soon to be Life).
Our son was a Life Scout and student pilot when he was accepted to NASS 2007. He made Eagle before NASS, but didn't update application until he filled out the full app.

whoaaaa. wait.
i'm not in scouts. false praise hahaa

joshual - i'm in the first district... maybe they're accepting one per district? i'm not sure, but that sounds reasonable. hang in there!

My daughter called admission today in ref. to her NASS application. At first they said that all letters would go out by April 15. She told them that she understands that "most all spots have been filled already". The reply was , "Yes, they have". She got them to look in the computer - very hesitant at first. She was not offered a spot but was advised she met the initial review process and will receive her Candidate number, etc.. in May. She could only go to the last session and is from NJ. I am sure two things that hurt her chances of getting in.

In this case you have to take the good with the bad.

if you did get in to the summer seminar is it assumed youll get a candidate number or will you go through a different process.

I too called the admissions office today, to sadly find out that i did not get accepted. :frown:

oh well...i tryed.

Good luck to the rest.

If they were found qualified by the board then yes- not everyone who goes to NASS gets an appointment so there are many who get numbers who don't go to NASS

BAD NEWS TODAY :(

talked to admissions and they told me i was not acccepted. not even waitlisted. honestly, very discouraging. i've been working my entire high school career to get into this program, and they don't even deem me worthy of the wait list.

i spoke with my regional counselor: which made me feel worse/better at the same time. he reviewed my application, and told me he honestly could not tell me anything to improve (except that test scores can virtually ALWAYS be raised). He said I was a very strong and competitive candidate for admission to USNA (team captain, club president, 3 sport varisty athlete, club officer, student government position, almost 300 hrs of community service, many other leadership positions, high gpa in honors/ap courses- including calc bc, well above average test scores, highly competitive high school, etc etc etc)

BUT I did not meet criteria they were looking for in NASS. he said my strong app was far better suited for the academy. and that they have "virtually nothing to do with eachother". he also said "only about 20 to 25% of NASS attendees will recieve appointments".

still. i am discouraged and a bit confused. admin counselor said that if i was from any other area i would have gotten in. if he can't tell me what to improve, how can i ever get into the academy, when i'm not even wait listed??

also, i was accepted to USAFA and USMA Summer Seminars....it makes me feel like they want me more than Navy does (even though I've always leaned towards Navy). So while I will still pursue an appointment to USNA, I can't help but feel a bit more "liked" by USAFA and USMA.

ok. sorry. that was long winded.

but i was wondering what you guys think: admin counselor said they use NASS as more of a recruiting tool to reach out to kids who they think may not be "on the college track" or have not really "considered the academy". what do you think about this? does this give "strong candidates" who are not accepted a fair shot and good view of the academy?

....just thinking....

NASS is a very good experience to have the opportunity to be a part of, but in the long run doesn't really mean anything. I attended NASS in 2007, now two years later I am waiting to hear about my second application to the Naval Academy. So don't think NASS equates to an appointment down the road. Continue to stand out and things will all work out for the best. You have a long senior year of high school ahead of you! Stay the course!

Oh, and enjoy the AirForce and Army summer seminars, that is something I wish I would have applied for just for the experience. Having been to NASS and assuming the others are the same you will learn a lot and meet a lot of cool people with the same goals as you. Good Luck!

I got into SS(probably b/c of my location) and I keep hearing about some people's applications with a ridiculous amount of extracurriculars. I am only involved in a few things and I was wondering if it is more typical for people accepted into the academy to have more extracurriculars. I know it is a bit late for me to start joining more things....but just wondering.

colorado416, you do not need to be apart of tons of ECAs its actually better you are in a select few and hold leadership positions/ are very active instead of dipping into tons of ECAs where you don't really do anything :)... and some people just like to inflate apps a little- by putting everything they have ever done/ had a chance encounter with. Good luck!
And stay the course- just because you don't get into NASS doesn't mean the Academy doesn't want you.

CONGRATS!

(i'm sorry i wasn't trying to downplay your acceptance!)

but ec's are just sorta my thing. i enjoy every one of them, and am efficient and productive in organizing/running events. (plus i'm a self proclaimed "sports freak"...so i've pursued my sports to do well)

not to worry usnahopeful. i don't inflate my stats, and i don't do a lot of things pointlessly. i just have a combo of hyperactiveness, ocd, drive, and love of service, leading, sports, music, and learning. (aka: my life has very little to no "down time")

wow... The waiting list must be really short or something .:frown: anyways I am still hopeful and waiting. I hope I find out before the end of spring break (spring break here in Israel is the week before passover and the week after).

sarah, that's really cool! how long have you been living in Israel?

I've always wanted to visit there....it seems fascinating : )

In reply to Academy Questions, I am sorry you didn't get in... I have lived in Israel for two years now. I am moving this summer to Tijuana, Mexico/ San Diego, California. It is pretty cool, I live right outside of Tel Aviv in Kfar Shmaryahu. You should visit here it is a great place to visit. In my opinion Tel Aviv is more fun than Jerusalem because in Tel Aviv there is more access to cities where the Romans used to live in like Qesaria also the north is fun. It is also very safe here. If you have any questions about Israel I am happy to answer them.

Has anyone actually received a rejection notification by mail or email yet? Or have those not arrived yet?
