I was recently awarded a LREC Naval Scholarship and I was hoping that any midshipmen who are in the program as well, or anyone who knows a great deal of information could PM me and answer some questions about the majors, thank you!

Sorry to ask a question when you yourself want a reply, but I'm an applicant hoping to earn an LREC scholarship, and wonder what you listed as an area/language specialization. Any insights you can find on this thread would be a great help to me as well.

I just finished my first year of NROTC as a College Programmer, and have been awarded a 3-year LREC scholarship. My major is International Studies, with a minor in Arabic...so I'll be taking Arabic for the next four semesters, as well as classes about the Middle East, History of Islam, etc.

Congrats on your scholarship, though! I could be wrong on this, but I remember (For GY 2014, anyway) reading that the Navy only gave out 24 LREC scholarships, and 0 3-year regular scholarships...I'm counting my blessings as I go!

theagentofchaos- I think I put down Russian and Eastern Europe has my specialization. I wish I could give you any insights, but the only thing I did was check that box, so thats all I pretty much know .

Bossadai- Thanks so much! It came has a huge surprise. Now I do have a question about your major of Internation Studies. The college I was put at does not offer Russian (the language I put down) or any specific cultural study. The only language I could major in is Spanish. Now they do have Internation and Cultural Studies, which I had originally planned on majoring in (and minoring in French), but I figured I couldn't because it wasn't on the paper that came in my packet. Now do you have any further information on whether or not I can major in International and Cultural Studies?

My son will be a junior with an LREC NROTC scholarship. His major is International Studies with an African Studies concentration. He will have French and history minors.

On his NROTC application, my son put down an Asian studies major and Chinese minor, but had changed his mind during his senior year in high school. He needed permission from the unit to change his course of study since his scholarship was awarded for the Asian Studies/Chinese language combination.

Here is a link to a document outlining the LREC requirements.

My son (and the other LREC major in his unit) has found that it is not possible to meet all of the academic requirements for his major/minor (including study abroad) and the coursework required by NROTC within four years.

Do you mean to say that LREC majors are obligated to complete the calc/physics/sciences requirements, in addition to MS classes?

Marie,

I'm going to guess here that the NETC is not aware that the college you will attend does not offer Russian. If I were you, I would contact the Professor of Naval Science at the school you will attend and make sure that your scholarship is not specifically awarded for Russian study. Alternatively you could email or call the Scholarship contact in Pensacola... it's been awhile but I believe that is P-Flying17 who posts here, and confirm you're OK.

Yes, LREC majors need to complete one year of calculus and one year of physics in addition to the Naval Science requirements and their individual degree requirements. Add in required study abroad, and there just aren't enough hours in the day to fit it all in within 4 years. (Engineering majors sometimes have the same issue). On the up side, my son is heading to Madagascar for four months of study abroad this fall.
