Navy ⚓️ cancels Basic graduation ceremony participation for family

I certainly understand their extreme caution with our military, but when I read that on the Recruit Training Command page, my heart absolutely broke for the sailors and their families. My older son went straight to boot camp from high school and attending his graduation was one of the most amazing things our family has ever been a part of. There is no way to describe the emotion when you see those big doors raise and the sailors begin marching in. I hope the families are able to at least meet them at the airport and spend some time with their sailors.

I went straight to boot camp as well and had nobody at my graduation. I never missed anything of my kids' events unless I was at sea or otherwise deployed, so I can feel the disappointment of those who would have attended.

I feel really bad for the graduates and families. I think about plebe summer and if their leave for parents weekend would be cancelled after all they worked so hard for. It’s got to be the same for boot camps.

I’ve read (not primary source so don’t know for sure) that their town liberty passes also are gone. How depressing!

The domino effects of this are u believable. I don’t recall any other heath scare like this before.

will this apply to other navy graduation ceremonies like at BUDS?
I haven't seen anything on BUDS but RTC does a graduation every week and the immediacy of the policy is related to that. I suppose if a BUDS graduation is coming soon then it might be considered. One thing considered in the boot camp decision is the large number of guests in attendance and it is held indoors.

I was in Navy Medicine for SARS, MERS, Ebola, and conducted an anti-Malaria campaign on the continent of Africa. Oh, and was the senior corpsman at the Marine Corps' Chemical Biological Incident Response Force where we ate, slept, and breathed this stuff. I was talking to a colleague this morning about COVID-19 as we are in the middle of a cluster and I am betting we will close all schools soon. She said as many have said that she doesn't think we are prepared, not responding fast enough, etc.; the same things many news sources are reporting.

I told her that Fauci at NIH and the folks at CDC were not just sitting around waiting for somebody to tell them what to do. They've been working this from the start. Not everybody needs to be tested. Not everybody needs N-95 masks. Vaccines take time to develop. I still think this will burn out by mid-April. If I'm wrong, then it's really gonna be a true health scare.

AF follows suit. Will miss my guys graduation. Rumor is they loose their town liberties as well. Such a bummer 😞

A civilian at BUMED has COVID-19. I’m surprised Northern Virginia hasn’t had more but it’s coming.

I read today the Marines will continue to allow guests to attend boot camp graduation. Both depots do it outdoors so that is probably the difference in the navy’s decision to keep guests out.

AF BMT at Lackland is also outdoors. Just listened to the briefing. They don’t want crowds gathered. I don’t know if it has Anything to do with the fact that they also have quarantined civilians there or not (they only said it’s unrelated). They are also shipping out the graduates right after graduation (so on Saturday) to their tech schools (instead of Monday).

At least they will have a good story to tell the grandkids....

We’re about to shut down the 10th largest school district in the country. Almost 200 thousand students. In a school not mine, a teacher was escorted off the property wearing a mask a couple days ago. I’m still unclear as to when the diagnosis of COVID-19 was made.

Just saw Tom Hanks and wife have tested positive. Reported on CNN.

This is oddly like the feeling of an impending hurricane. Or blizzard. Everyone preps and then waits for it to hit.

I keep a certain amount of certain items in stock but will go out tomorrow and raid the shelves of the local Target.
