Navy? A better choice for fighters than AF?

Thanks but Iit just seems too risky. If I go ROTC, I may not it into field training, or I could get RPA's out of UPT. If I go Guard, I am really up against AD fighter pilots and airline pilots. I don't think any of you are changing my dream, I believe you are telling me the facts and the reality of it. I'm glad I came here to ask these questions and got tons of valuable help from you guys. If I hadn't, I would have probably went down the wrong road.
Honestly, I knew 24 hours ago that nothing anyone said here would change your opinion. I posted yesterday #36 that I thought you made your decision.

I continued to post, not for you, but other posters and lurkers that might think like you.

I wish you the best success and wherever your path leads you, that you will be happy and no regrets.
Thanks.There wasn't anything that could, but I didn't know enough about what I was getting myself into. I will continue to try the guard, but I will not enlist but instead apply off the street.

I plan to go to Va Tech University. I' hoping to go into NASA as an aerospace engineer first. Ii know tons of people will want to go into the same field too, but I wouldn't have to worry about being committed to doing something I don't enjoy. In ROTC, I could be committed to serve in RPA in which I wouldn't benefit at all, therefore hindering my goals afterwrd. I wouldn't risk anything just applying to NASA.

Our DD is at VT, she is now a fellow in their grad program. At VT every semester during finals week the registrar sets up tables outside of the engineering building for one reason. @ 33% that enter the engineering program will graduate as an engineer. Her friend came back from her first class as a freshmen and said the Prof told them look left, look right only 1 of you will graduate from on this program.

Also, I would say that if you don't join the Corps, there will be other students with the same dream, and because they were in the Corps they might have an edge just because they have a little more insight from that life. Corps cadets live in a specific dorm. It is their SMC lifestyle.
~ You can be in the Corps, but not in ROTC. They will have that EC in college carrying a cgpa like yours, but if you don't join the Corps what will you have for ECs?
~~ VT is a huge networking college. See my prior posts regarding this issue.
~~~ ANG is not like AROTC with SMP.
I am getting more Janie Raincloud with every post, a fact I hate, but you also keep twisting your plans to meet your desire of least resistance.
~ you have gone through ROTC, Guard, Marines and now VT going corporate. Yet, with every turn reality isn't meeting up with your expectations.
Honestly, I get the RPA issue, just like I get those that were given a CSO instead of pilot. However, you didn't put into the equation of straining. Actually you never explored that aspect. Want to know the UPT students that blow the typical newly minted out of the water there? It is those that were picked up for xtraining. They spend their first tour in that career field, and are picked up for UPT, 27-28. They have endured the school system, and especially for CSOs most of them get stick time.
~ RPAs also have more experience than anyone that plays any Xbox game.
~~ They know how to study for the BOLD.
FYI do you realize the initial cadre food RPA were pilots?
I am going to be honest right now. I don't believe you want to defend this great nation or fly the 35. I believe you want to go to NASA for Mars and you are looking for the path of least resistance to get there.
Sorry, but thar is my opinion. Nothing wrong with the goal. Just be honest and say to us the military in your opinion was the easiest stepping stone.
Than in that case I would join the corps.
The guard unit that I think would be your number 1 choice is not going to be a cakewalk. I think it might be a lot of networking.
Just guessing.
I really wanted to fly the F35.Yes, I was going the military way because it seems the best route to go to become an astronaut. I wanted to become a military test pilot, but I wanted to test on fighters. I'm just not going that route because I don't know what other roadblocks could be waiting for me. I do want to become an astronaut more than a fighter pilot.
The first unit I heard is getting the F35 is the VT ANG. I am aware it will the unit that many f16 and f15 units will apply to as well. I am not enlisting, I am applying off the street. I'm considering joining the corps, but I'm not sure how much value will being a helo test pilot will be to the space companies than a fixed wing test pilot.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but It seems like trying to come an astronaut is more realistic than becoming a fighter pilot.
Yeah, with degree in Russian you'll be able to interpret on your stop over at the ISS on your way to Mars. Or if that doesn't work out. Then you maybe you can get Chekov's seat on the Starship Enterprise. He's probably about 80 by now. But no. He's been travelling at multiple warp speed so he's now probably about 8. Whatever you do I'd get on that flight deck with Lt. Uhura. Just make sure she's at least 18.
flyguy, I think you're a chain yanker.
If your not, that's how you appear.
Pima, the Lord only gives us so many words. Please don't throw away anymore of yours into this sucking vortex.
What do you mean? I was explaining how I would get a degree in Russian language because it will be beneficial to NASA.
He or she is just being a dick because they think your just wasting time, more than likely because they think your aspirations are too big. In the end just contact a mentor who actually was a astronaut. It may be hard to contact one but if you find a good one maybe they will be willing to speak with you and help you down the right path. I met a few and they seemed like great people.
This post breaks my heart.
It is all about you. YOU want to go F35s so YOU can be an astronaut.
Where do you say I want to defend this great nation?
Now I am done, you care more about your career than defending this country... Whatever gets you there first is all that matters to you.
Jclepps, kinnem, Bullet, Navyhoops, myself and evry posters cares more about defending this country.
Good luck with that Guard path, and please keep us updated.
They are great people.
I don't think anyone is being a jerk. I think reality checks are being given instead of blowing smoke up their arse.
Do you believe Bullet is being a dick?
Have you winged yet?
No offense, just trying to understand your post. Where you stand from experience.
Trust me I am just a wife (Bullets) that spent 20 years as a dependent and a Mom of a C130 pilot . I get you may have more insight than me, but I don't get saying to any poster you know the 35 program like Bullet does.
~Yes, this is a wife defending a spouse that has no need to be defended!
~ This a Mom that lived the AF as a spouse and saw how few git TPS, WIC and Thunderbirds out of the Strike Eagle Community.
Can it be done? SHEAATT yes? But tell me how many Russian majors get selected for TPS? Stepping stone for astronaut via AF is TPS.
Nobody is jealous or trying to kill a dream, what is being said are facts regarding the process. Plain and simple.
The kid is talking about becoming an astronaut and his degree program with how it might benefit him with NASA, nor did I comment about the 35 program. But I didn't know calling someone a chain yanker and talking about Starship Enterprise and hooking up with Lt. Uhura was productive, I stand corrected.
And Pima my post is directed at the person who said that, not the useful posts by yourself or Bullet.
I am only responding now to posters.
Done with flyguy.
He has shown no desire to defend this great nation, only about his career desires using the military to achieve his aspirations.
~ Bullet and my DS only ever wanted to serve.
If he was psychic and knew that Virgin or NASA will send him to Mars sooner than the military, I bet he would not go the military.
~ Nothing wrong with that, but just be honest. Reading his posts he has no desire to serve in the military unless there is a better shot of becoming an astronaut.
OK folks. This is getting a little ugly and since I don't think there is any new ground to explore here, I'm closing this thread.
