A former Naval Academy doctor has been charged with conduct unbecoming an officer and violating state and federal laws related to wiretapping and destruction of evidence after Navy prosecutors said he secretly videotaped several midshipmen having sex at his house.

But Bill Ferris, a civilian lawyer representing Cmdr. Kevin Ronan, said the charges stem from an extortion attempt by a disgruntled former midshipman who had moved in with his client after he was dismissed from the academy....

In tearful testimony, a former midshipman said today that because of the close relationship he had with a Navy doctor, it took him several days to go to the authorities after he discovered videos he alleges the doctor secretly shot of him and other midshipmen having sex with their girlfriends, masturbating and lying around naked in a guest room at his Annapolis home.

The accused officer, Cmdr. Kevin Ronan "had been pretty good to all of us," said the former midshipman, who was kicked out of the Naval Academy for bad grades before the alleged discovery of the videos....

A defense lawyer questioned the credibility of the central prosecution witness in a case against a Navy doctor accused of secretly videotaping midshipmen having sex at his house.

William Ferris, a civilian lawyer representing Cmdr. Kevin Ronan, said the former midshipman, who said he found secretly recorded surveillance sex tapes while looking for toothpaste in Ronan’s bedroom, made up the charges as part of an extortion attempt. The ex-midshipman, Addy Strasdas, wanted to force Ronan into paying his tuition at a civilian college after he was expelled from the Naval Academy, Ferris alleged....

Two former midshipmen testified yesterday that a Navy physician secretly videotaped about nine mids and a female civilian during intimate moments in a guest room at his Annapolis home.

Prosecutors said that for more than two years, from July 2004 until his home was searched in January of this year, Cmdr. Kevin J. Ronan taped midshipmen masturbating and having sex with their dates....
