Navy Football article

IMHO I know other will disagree. This article is such BS. Coach Ken needs to just go to another school. Are you going to Navy to play football or service your country? Navy should not be in the American Conference! The facilities at MACD are worse than a sewer and he is worried about a training table! The problem starts and ends with coaching and recruiting. He is trying to play a defense with players that are not skilled to play it. The offense is not the triple-option they run a spread type offense. Mother B has mold problems and this guy is worried about training tables! Give me a break. Coach Ken has been here for 20 years he had a chance to leave for BYU (I wish he would have left!) Didn't yet he received a raise and signed at Navy. BTW where do his kids go? Navy???? No. Does that tell you something?

I do not believe Navy football was ever in the Patriot League; it was independent with a wide variety of games, and a shot at a bowl invitation if the season stats made sense. The rest of Navy varsity is in the Patriot League.

When independent, there was always USMA, USAFA and Notre Dame, of course, but also games with Wake Forest, Duke, Rutgers, WVU, VMI, Tulane, Delaware (QB Joe Flacco blew right through Navy D with his passing game) and others from across the country. The bowl games, when they happened, were an eclectic mix.

This is a topic that is endlessly and often energetically debated within alumni and other circles.

I could've sworn they were there in the beginning, but am probably wrong. Either way, the Patriot League would make for some very competitive football games. Of course I'm being selfish. I live within a 20 min drive of two Patriot League schools.

As a Rutgers grad, I groan every year since they joined the Big10. I grew up next to the stadium and went to games my whole life. This was way before the Patriot League, but it was the same teams. Holy Cross, Colgate, Lehigh... And of course the Princeton rivalry. All of that is gone, and the stadium is now empty by the 3rd quarter of every game.

I know Navy was independent when I came to USNA for duty in the late 90’s. Not sure what past history is, but given the hoopla in 2014 when they joined a league, I think they were independent from the get-go. Someone will have the right answer.

Money is stitched into every part of this.

I’m new to this particular rodeo, a Plebe mom. But last year was not enjoyable, as an avid football fan/mom.

I’m also in a current March Madness *MEH*, so generally not in a good mood sports wise [emoji23]

There is no question that athletics, including Football, is a critical component of achieving the USNA mission. Douglas McArthur once said " On the fields of friendly strife are sown the seeds that on other days, on other fields will bear the fruits of victory.”

That said, I see and hear too many signs that we are slipping away from the concept of student -athlete, and placing to much emphasis on the athlete, and suspect that its all about the money. Revenue from televised games and Bowl appearances funds much of the rest of Navy athletics, but at what cost ? The move to ACC was wrong for a number of reasons ...it certainly increases visibility and revenue, but changed the character of the program.

Finally, I don't follow college football much...there is only one game that has any meaning to me, everything else is just a warm up. I don't like having the ACC championship game the week before Army-Navy.

Navy was always an independent in Football until they joined the AAC.

I grew up near Rutgers as well and always liked to see Navy play them in the past. A friend from childhood was an All American at RU and is on their All-Time team. From what I saw, things seemed to change in the Rutgers crowds in the early 00's and the last time I went to see Navy v Rutgers in Piscataway, I came away thinking that Navy should not subject the team and fans to that level of abuse and sure enough, that was the last time Navy played there. Lots of embarrassment on the RU side and even my eldest son (attending RU at the time) was not happy about the fan behavior. In recent yrs, RU football has been on a downswing and Navy could probably compete pretty well but I'd rather that we stayed away from that matchup.

I grew up in Piscataway. My mom worked in the RU Athletic Office for 25 years, from the late 60's to the 90's. We still get comp tickets, but I don't even bother going. I would always park in one of my relatives driveways behind the Greek church and walk across the golf course. Last RU game I went to was with my younger son. Ohio State game I guess 2 years ago? Drunks in the street. People throwing up in my aunt's front yard and on the golf course. The stadium had lines of 100+ for the men's rooms due to all the excessive tailgating. Drunk guys started relieving themselves on the wall right next to the concession stand. Not my idea of wholesome family fun. I miss the old stadium and the teams they used to play.

Such a ridiculous article. My daughter plays varsity lacrosse for Navy...............Niumatololo's comment about muscle milk? Um, excuse me, but when's the last time Navy football played the number one team in the country? NWL routinely does and did once again this year. And I know, it's all about money. No charge for NWL games..............but if you charge they will still come. NWL has gone to the NCAA playoffs two years running (Final Four in 2017), yet it costs money to attend the men's lacrosse games??? Either charge for both or not for either. I know, I digress, but that article really got me going.

Thanks for correcting me. I say let Ken leave. He will not be missed and neither will his silly 4th down plays where the back tries to get the defense to jump offsides. Nobody falls for it. I say it is time for Chet to go too. Make a clean sweep and go back to playing a schedule that fits the caliber of player who is interested in going to NAVY! According to https://247sports.com/.../navy/Season/2019-Football/Commits/ not one 4 or 5 star recruit. Nationally the 122nd ranked class and 11 out of 12 in the AAC. It will be a long time before Navy is in the title hunt of the AAC.

Right...lot's of talk and not a whole lot action. Here's an idea.....reading the article Coach Ken kept referred to "Chet listening"... "Chet recognizing".... " "Chet knows"....."Excited about what Chet is doing". Hey, maybe we should ask Chet to recognize, know, and get excited about the infrastructure and use his position to put in a good word to the brass and then maybe something else "will get what football gets"

I honestly dont follow Navy Football. I follow Stanford and the Pac 12. If you are going play in the big leagues then you better be prepared for it or you are going to get a lot of the kids hurt. I was watching a thing on HBO Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel (i think) and how traditional black colleges play top college teams including Notre Dame for money (school gets the money) and how damaged they players get because they arent in the same league in terms of training and or physcality. Besides the fact that you need good equipment and facilities to win, you also need this stuff in order to make sure the players dont get hurt when playing. I have no idea what you need to win and stay safe, but if you going to play at a certain level, the team needs to be supplied with the right equipment

"Douglas McArthur once said " On the fields of friendly strife are sown the seeds that on other days, on other fields will bear the fruits of victory.”

Very well said Old Navy BGO. Putting into context General MacArthur's statement, it was made in the 1920's when USMA was a top five ranked teams for decades -- kind of like if the Army program was Alabama, Clemson, type program. The mission statement of each Service Academy is to produce leaders for our military -- to teach academically, military and ethically in order to earn the privilege to lead the nation's men and women -- and into battle if necessary. No where is the mission statement to field top ranked football teams. Yes, good for morale to have a Saturday afternoon mental break from the rigors of Academy life. But, fielding a competitive D1 football team is not the purpose or design of the Service Academies (IMHO).
