Money is stitched into every part of this.
Navy was always an independent in Football until they joined the AAC.I know Navy was independent when I came to USNA for duty in the late 90’s. Not sure what past history is, but given the hoopla in 2014 when they joined a league, I think they were independent from the get-go. Someone will have the right answer.

I grew up near Rutgers as well and always liked to see Navy play them in the past. A friend from childhood was an All American at RU and is on their All-Time team. From what I saw, things seemed to change in the Rutgers crowds in the early 00's and the last time I went to see Navy v Rutgers in Piscataway, I came away thinking that Navy should not subject the team and fans to that level of abuse and sure enough, that was the last time Navy played there. Lots of embarrassment on the RU side and even my eldest son (attending RU at the time) was not happy about the fan behavior. In recent yrs, RU football has been on a downswing and Navy could probably compete pretty well but I'd rather that we stayed away from that matchup.I could've sworn they were there in the beginning, but am probably wrong. Either way, the Patriot League would make for some very competitive football games. Of course I'm being selfish. I live within a 20 min drive of two Patriot League schools.
As a Rutgers grad, I groan every year since they joined the Big10. I grew up next to the stadium and went to games my whole life. This was way before the Patriot League, but it was the same teams. Holy Cross, Colgate, Lehigh... And of course the Princeton rivalry. All of that is gone, and the stadium is now empty by the 3rd quarter of every game.
Thanks for correcting me. I say let Ken leave. He will not be missed and neither will his silly 4th down plays where the back tries to get the defense to jump offsides. Nobody falls for it. I say it is time for Chet to go too. Make a clean sweep and go back to playing a schedule that fits the caliber of player who is interested in going to NAVY! According to https://247sports.com/.../navy/Season/2019-Football/Commits/ not one 4 or 5 star recruit. Nationally the 122nd ranked class and 11 out of 12 in the AAC. It will be a long time before Navy is in the title hunt of the AAC.Navy was always an independent in Football until they joined the AAC.I know Navy was independent when I came to USNA for duty in the late 90’s. Mother B has mold problems and this guy is worried about training tables!
"Douglas McArthur once said " On the fields of friendly strife are sown the seeds that on other days, on other fields will bear the fruits of victory.”
Very well said Old Navy BGO. Putting into context General MacArthur's statement, it was made in the 1920's when USMA was a top five ranked teams for decades -- kind of like if the Army program was Alabama, Clemson, type program. The mission statement of each Service Academy is to produce leaders for our military -- to teach academically, military and ethically in order to earn the privilege to lead the nation's men and women -- and into battle if necessary. No where is the mission statement to field top ranked football teams. Yes, good for morale to have a Saturday afternoon mental break from the rigors of Academy life. But, fielding a competitive D1 football team is not the purpose or design of the Service Academies (IMHO).
