The USS Port Royal was pulled off a rock and sand shoal at around 2 a.m. after crews removed about 500 tons of water and 100 tons of anchors and other equipment to lighten the vessel.

Free at last, free at last.....

It got a lot lighter with the removal of about 185 pounds of 4-striper.

ooh, ouch... It is going into drydock. There are some short articles on NavyTimes.com on the sequence of events.
What happens in a case like that? Will the captain have to leave the Navy or just get reassigned to something where he is not in charge of the expensive toys?

It depends on the results of the investigation, but you can be sure that The CO is no longer thinking about making Admiral.

Often, the CO is reassigned due to the Fleet Commander's "loss of confidence" or words to that effect.
