Navy-Notre Dame Game this Saturday

I am taking DD to the game in Jacksonville this Saturday. Never been to a Navy Football game before. Any traditions I should look for - besides, of course, enjoying watching the game. (I am an old Navy Chief so I will of course wear Blue/Gold).

Chief, definitely wear your favorite I've-been-there Navy ball cap! This will help differentiate you from Notre Dame blue and gold fans.

Game gouge below. You want to be in your seats by March On of the Brigade.

Take some bucks for purchase of Navy gear. I bet there will be a kiosk. You will appreciate the Navy home stadium one is called "The Goat Locker."

EverBank Field is an NFL stadium, so NFL rules will be followed for stuff carried in. That means clear plastic bags and no handbags bigger than a small wristlet. Travel light in a jacket with pockets.

Edit: I don't think there are any "old" Navy Chiefs. Just salty ones. I was properly raised as an Ensign by my 4 harbor tugboat craft master Chiefs, the 3 harbor pilot Master Chiefs, 2 CWO4 fellow division officers, and an LDO bosun department head.

NavyJax: There is a lot of respect at ND for USNA. There is a great story about how ND is indebted to the Navy for helping it stay open during WWII. I am on the run at the moment, but if you search my recent posts I provide a link to the history. One nice tradition is that after the game both teams will pay respect to the other's Alma Mater.

I go to a lot of Jaguar games, my biggest tip is definitely to bring a hat and have some sunscreen handy.

ND Grad and rooting for ND but honestly, the better wish is that it is a good game. Both teams are hot/ cold this season. Would hate to see a poorly played game that reflects badly on both programs.

Watched Navy-ND in the Meadow Lands when DD was a plebe. We were seated in with a large group of ND fans dressed in our USNA regalia. When a few began to get on us a bit they were rapidly put in their place by many of the other ND fans in the vicinity. Had a great time. N 35 - ND 17

When they played in Dublin a few years ago, we were welcomed everywhere by the locals. Most of the locals decided they weren't huge fans of Notre Dame fans. It gave us a good laugh.

Hoops, we were probably standing next to each other at the pep rally on St. Stephen's Green. A memorable trip. We combined it with 10 days driving up in the northwest. They should go there again in the next 15 years. Worth doing again.

We spent 8 days in Ireland and Scotland. Had a blast. We did most of it on the front side of the game and then left after the game. Was a great week.

I work closely with a ND grad. Next Friday we have a big meeting with our CIO (I work at a fortune 100 company) and loser has to sing the winners fight song in front of our entire senior staff.

osdad: I can't account for all the ND fans but remember that ND has a HUGE fan base - most of whom are not graduates. Glad to hear the majority of the fans you encountered were policing the rabble. I have been to hundreds of college football games (yes, hundreds!) and on balance, I think ND fans are pretty respectful - especially of the Service Academy teams. Still, it only takes one idiot in a "Fighting Irish" T-shirt to ruin someone's experience. As you note, one surefire way to shut up the opposing fans is to win big.

I hope it is a well-played game by both teams and in the end, I hope ND wins. Go Irish!

I was at that game in Ireland also....ND still throwing with the score well in hand, scoring an unnecessary late touchdown...but then again at that time, running up the score was required for BCS points...

Maybe just once, we (Navy) can actually get a real home game in Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and have a large crowd on our side instead of one loaded with "Subway Alumni" who can't even find South Bend IN on a map....

The N-ND game is second only to A-N and Bowl games in terms of money (TV revenues too) generated for USNA NAAA and Brigade athletics. NFL stadiums deliver the capacity for maximum revenue, and a recruiting/branding opportunity in different parts of the country. But I hear you...

N-ND was played at FEDEX field (Redskins home) a few years ago. That one was an easy one.

We did the "Disney game" in Orlando awhile ago. Fun one, we booked a full trip with parks.

We are tailgating at home, sofa-side, this year.

Navy will never play ND at Navy Marine Corps stadium. Too many seats and revenue to be made. Also with guaranteed tickets needed per contract for ND, doubt our stadium holds the capacity needed. They have played them at FEDEX and Ravens Stadium. Ravens stadium has been the norm for most of it lately with the random Orlando, Ireland and Jville. Ravens is our big game home game field of late.

Understand the tradition of playing ND, but anyone who spent the last 8 years on AD also understands that traditions vanish quickly. Some of us on this forum are lectured routinely about how "times have changed"....well guess what, times changed dramatically when Navy Football joined a conference, added the opportunity to play an extra conference championship game and actually has something to play for now. Had Navy beat Houston last year and played in the Peach Bowl, it would have been a $15 million dollar greater payout over the meaningless Military Bowl. Trying to maintain 3 "rivalry" games is a fools errand, the obvious one to either go away or play on more favorable "improve our chance of winning" terms is ND...
