I got an inquiry from a Navy Option MIDN, and of course I referred him to his adviser since I don't have an answer for him. Thought I might check with the community here in any case though:

Does anyone know of any Navy option second class cruises other than the standard 6 weeks spent aboard an LSD or Sub?

bump... and to quote the tree after if falls in the Progressive insurance commercials... "Anybody?"

Possible Summer Training Assignments
Nuclear Power: Midshipmen can be assigned to nuclear submarine or nuclear surface vessels
Marine Corps 6-Week Course: First class Marine Option midshipmen are assigned to Marine units for summer training
CORTRAMID: NROTC second and third class scholarship midshipmen assigned to this training. Training consists of surface, submarine, aviation, and Marine Corps Orientation
Afloat Aviation Option: Selected midshipmen train aboard a carrier; training includes flight time on navy aircraft if feasible
Ashore Aviation Option: Selected midshipmen train with a Navy aviation squadron, including flight time if feasible
Foreign Exchange Training of Midshipmen (FOREXTRAMID) and Japanese Maritime Self-defense Force (JMSDF) Exchanges: Selected midshipmen train with Navies of other countries

Thanks Grunt. I'll pass it along to this MIDN. I'm assuming he eventually wants to try to go SEALs based on what I know about him, but he doesn't have a shot for a SEAL cruise until first class. DOn't know what his second choice might be, but if it's aviation then he should take a look at that.

Back in my day "mini" BUDS was open to rising 1/c and 2/c. It was an extra assignment, not a replacement for CORTRAMID or 1/c cruise, similar to going to jump school. Things may have changed.

Thanks Old Salt. I'll pass it along. i was assuming you had to complete a screener for that but perhaps not.

There was an application process. It was very competitive. I know the program still exists. I assume it is more so now. My DS has no interest in specwar so I haven't looked into it.

Well I know this guy has a specwar interest as he works out with the specwar club and they do their "evolutions" on friday evening when everyone else is at happy hour. Now THAT'S dedication.

I am a 4/C MIDN right now with interest in SPECWAR. What they have told us is that mini BUD/S takes the place of 1/C cruise. My mentor, who is 2/C just went to the screener at the Academy, that is not necessary for NROTC MIDN to do, it's more for the Academy guys because the evals decide whether or not they get into mini BUD/S. NROTC guys just put SEALs down on their Dream Sheet and hope they can get picked up for mini BUD/S
