What a hoot:

http://www.hometownannapolis.com/cgi-bin/read/2007/04_22-111/CAN

I have been to this. Sounds like it is getting better every year. Let's forget I-Day or PPW get togethers. :shake: I propose the annual SA Forum Tail Gater every year. :thumb: Heck, I've got the white bucs, argyle socks, blue crumpled seersucker suit, and Navy B & G repp bowtie. Anyone know where I can get a straw boater w/ B & G band.

I think this was my kid's mandatory sport for spring set of first class year.

Navy Offense Erupts In Service Academy Sweep

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's lacrosse team outscored a pair of service academy foes, 39-9, cruising to a pair of victories in the Quad Services Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Mids routed Air Force, 18-5, in the opener and then breezed past Coast Guard, 21-4, in their second game.

"Our offense played very well today and I was pleased with our defense," said Navy head coach Cindy Timchal. "It was a good all-around effort."

In the opening game, Navy led the Falcons, 4-2, before closing the first half on a 6-1 run for a 10-3 halftime cushion. Navy then pushed the lead to 15-3, before settling for the 18-5 decision. Freshman Erin Rawlick tallied career highs in points (10) and goals (8) to lead the Navy charge. Classmate Mary Ruttum added seven points on two goals and a career-high five assists. Amanda Towey and Elise Chapdelaine added five and four points, respectively.

As a team, Navy outshot the Falcons, 31-15, and picked up 35 ground balls to Air Force's 20. The Mids also forced 17 Air Force turnovers. In goal, three goalies allowed just five goals, with Natalie Blandon seeing the majority of the action (45:22), stopping five shots.

In game two, the Mids bolted out to a 9-0 advantage just 15 minutes into the contest and were never threatened in a 21-4 rout of Coast Guard. The Mids left 14-2 at halftime and cruised home to their second-largest margin of victory this season.

Rawlick continued her impressive day with another 10 points (5 g, 5 a). Towey went over the 100-point plateau for the season with a seven-point effort (1 g, 6 a) and now has 104 points. Ruttum added six points (5 g, 1 a) and Chapdelaine and Sarah Bushong each scored four points each.

In goal, three Navy keepers combined for six stops, led by Vanessa Nieves' three saves in just 18:29 of action.

As a team, Navy outshot Coast Guard, 40-16, picked up 37 ground balls to the Bears' 20, and won 20 draw controls to just six for Coast Guard.

"I thought Erin Rawlick and Mary Ruttum really stepped up offensively today," said Timchal. "Ruttum did a great job in the first game finding open people and putting the ball in the right spot. Erin and Amanda did that in the second game. It was very encouraging to get such a balanced effort out of our offense."

The Mids, now 14-4 on the year, will host Army on Sunday at noon in the conclusion of the Quad Services Tournament. The game will take place at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and admission is free.

Mids Shut Out UMES, 3-0 and 1-0

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy baseball junior starting pitchers Mark McCoy (Parkland, Fla.) and Mitch Harris (Mt. Holly, N.C.) both fired a complete game shutout as the Midshipmen swept Maryland-Eastern Shore, 3-0 and 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium.

With the wins, Navy improved to 34-19 on the year, matching the school record for wins set by the 1995 Midshipmen. Maryland-Eastern Shore dropped to 9-39 with the setbacks.

The back-to-back shutouts are the first by the Midshipmen since they blanked Duquesne in a twinbill on March 25, 2001, in Annapolis.

“Mark and Mitch obviously pitched very well today,” stated Navy head coach Paul Kostacopoulos. “When you pitch that well, it gives you a really good chance to win. They pitched ahead for most of the day and didn’t fall into too many offensive counts.”

McCoy needed only 80 pitches, 59 of which were strikes, to retire Maryland-Eastern Shore in the opener, as he scattered four hits with one walk and six strikeouts. He improved his mark to 8-4 on the year.

Harris followed with a one-hitter on the hill, a leadoff single through the right side in the fifth, as he walked two and matched his career high in strikeouts with 12. The 12-strikeout performance pushed his season total to 114, establishing a new Patriot League single-season record and into sole possession of second place in Navy’s program history. The single in the fifth inning was the only ball in play that left the infield during the entire second game. Harris also improved to 8-4 on the campaign.

In game one, Navy took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, as senior B.J. Bickel (Benson, N.C.) singled home freshman Kendall Bolt (Stockton, Calif.), who led off the stanza with a double to left. The Mids made it 3-0 in the third inning, as freshman Steven Soares (Coral Springs, Fla.) delivered a RBI single and Bickel laid down a bunt with one out to score the second run of the frame.

The only offensive production to come for the Midshipmen in the nightcap came during the fourth inning. Bickel was hit by a pitch with one out and stole second with two outs. Senior team captain Michael Garcia (Kailua, Hawai’i) legged out a slow roller up the middle for an infield single, while Bickel hustled around third and beat the throw at home with a head-first slide.

Junior first baseman Thomas Hamilton (Houston, Texas) extended his hitting streak to 12 games, as he combined for a 3-for-5 effort at the plate with a triple and two walks. During his career against Maryland-Eastern Shore, Hamilton is hitting .625 (10-for-16).

“Thomas has been a really good hitter for us over the last month,” said Kostacopoulos. “He’s continuing to pick up hits and finds ways to get on base. He has done a really nice job.”

Freshman outfielder Michael Speciale (Pearland, Texas) went 3-for-6 during Saturday’s twinbill, while Soares posted a pair of hits in the opener. Soares also gunned down both base stealers from behind the plate and picked off a runner at first base.

Navy and Maryland-Eastern Shore will conclude the three-game set tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 12 noon. Live stats will be available for the Navy’s regular season finale via GameTracker on www.navysports.com (.)

Navy Finishes Second at Patriot League Championship

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Navy women’s track & field team won three events and recorded eight top-two performances on Saturday as the Midshipmen finished second at the Patriot League Championship held at Lehigh’s Goodman Outdoor Track & Field Complex.

The Midshipmen, who led after the opening day on Friday, tallied 187 points over the two-day championship to finish 20 points behind Bucknell’s first-place total of 207 points. Army was the only other school to reach triple digits in points this weekend, finishing third with 108 points.

Navy has finished among the top-three schools in each of the last six Patriot League Championships, including back-to-back second-place performances.

After winning two field events on Friday and was named Patriot League Field Athlete of the Meet, Navy senior Kirsten Andrews (New Holland, Pa.) turned her focus to the track, where she won another event and helped on the 4x100-meter relay. Andrews won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.14 seconds, edging Bucknell’s Catherine Trentacoste by 0.01-second. Andrews teamed up with seniors Priscilla Lewis (St. Andrews, Jamaica), Loni Forsythe (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Danielle Still (Lawnside, N.J.) for a school-record time of 47.11 seconds to finish in second place.

Navy senior Justine Whipple (Duxbury, Mass.) bounced back from winning the 10,000-meter run yesterday to claim first-place honors in the 5,000-meter run on Saturday and earned Patriot League Track Athlete-of-the-Meet accolades. Whipple raced to a time of 17:19.27, more than nine seconds ahead of the second-place time.

Forsythe and Lewis owned the top-two marks in the 100-meter dash and both scored in the 200-meter dash event. Forsythe won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.97 seconds, followed by Lewis’ 12.33-second showing. Forsythe came in third during the 200-meter dash finals with a 24.78-second clocking, while Lewis placed fourth with a time of 25.05 seconds.

The Midshipmen produced three of the top-five times in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to score 16 points. Sophomore Maureen Dooley (Durham, Conn.) placed second with a time of 11:12.05, followed by junior Kyleigh Millhouse’s (Boiling Springs, Pa.) 11:14.68 clocking for third place and freshman Nicole Kauzlarich’s (Annapolis, Md.) fifth-place time of 11:30.44. All three of the times were career-best marks.

Junior Elizabeth Wrona (Fairfax Station, Va.) and sophomore Katie Berkey (Tempe, Ariz.) finished second and third, respectively, in the high jump. Wrona cleared 1.65 meters, while Berkey surpassed the 1.60-meter bar. Berkey also came in fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 11.64 meters, led by sophomore Colleen Conley’s (Woodstock, Md.) third-place effort of 11.70 meters.

Junior Michelle Bostic (Rockwall, Texas) came in second place during the 400-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 1:01.21, followed by junior Jessica Orr’s (New Holland, Pa.) 1:04.22 showing in fifth-place. Bostic also recorded a time of 14.44 seconds, a career-best effort, in the 100-meter hurdles to tally third-place points.

Still completed the two-day heptathlon competition with 4,292 points for third place. Senior Erin Demchko (Pearl River, N.Y.) and junior Lauren Burmeister (Brownsdale, Minn.) both produced sixth-place efforts to score a point for the Mids. Demchko ran the 1,500-meter run in a career-best time of 4:34.86 and Burmeister completed the 400-meter dash in 59.18 seconds.

The Midshipmen will return to action next weekend when they travel up to Princeton, N.J., for the ECAC Championship.

Mids Land Third at Patriot League Championship

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Navy men’s track & field junior Paul Harris (Woodbury, Minn.) won two events, assisted on another event title and broke a league record on Saturday to lead the Midshipmen to a third-place finish at the Patriot League Championship at Lehigh’s Goodman Outdoor Track & Field Complex.

The Midshipmen won seven events on Saturday to rack up 141 points over the two-day championship, only 23 points behind defending league-champion Army’s 164 points and three points off Bucknell’s 144-point tally.

Harris, selected this year’s Patriot League Track Athlete of the Meet, highlighted a cast of three Navy runners that scored points in the 400-meter dash, as he broke the league championship record with a blistering time of 46.77 seconds. Junior William Ricks (Sussex, Va.) followed in third with an IC4A time of 48.06 seconds and senior Cameron Lindsay (Kernersville, N.C.) placed fifth with a 48.97-second showing. Harris also won the 200-meter dash with a season-best time of 21.53 seconds, while Ricks notched a point with his 22.13-second, sixth-place showing.

Ricks, Lindsay, junior Craig Meekins (Baldwin, N.Y.) and Harris combined for a first-place time of 3:09.71 in the 4x400-meter relay. The clocking qualified them for the NCAA regional championship and was the third-fastest time in school history.

The Midshipmen registered the top-two marks in a pair of field events on Saturday. Senior Stephen White (Marietta, Ga.) won the high jump for the second-consecutive year, clearing a NCAA regional-qualifying mark of 2.10 meters. Classmate Cole Herron (Sanger, Calif.) surpassed the 2.07-meter bar, a season-best clearance, in finishing second in the event.

In the discus throw, junior Andre Barber (Carrollton, Texas) out-distanced the field with a season-best toss of 49.79 meters. Fellow junior Darryl Hunter (Des Moines, Iowa) also uncorked a season-best throw on Saturday, placing second with a mark of 49.56 meters. Hunter also won the shot put with a distance of 16.93 meters during the day.

Navy’s other event victory came in the 110-meter hurdles, where junior Ron Belany (Haiku, Hawai’i) crossed the finish line first with a career-best time of 14.66 seconds.

The Midshipmen received multiple scoring contributions in two addition events on Saturday. Meekins recorded a NCAA regional-qualifying time of 1:49.59 in the 800-meter run to finish second, which also ranks as the fifth-quickest effort in school history. Burke completed the race in 1:52.51 to earn sixth-place points, narrowly missing the IC4A standard by 0.01-second.

Senior Michael Niemi (Duluth, Minn.) placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:11.13, followed by junior John Olsen’s (Staten Island, N.Y.) 9:14.51 showing to come in fourth.

Competing for the first time during the outdoor season, junior Dante Marshall (Hermitage, Pa.) landed fourth in the triple jump with an IC4A-distance of 14.56 meters. Junior Ben Kozy (Houston, Texas) finished fifth in th 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:51.57 and sophomore Joe Mills (Bay Shore, N.Y.) crossed the finish line in 54.12 seconds during the 400-meter hurdles to also tally fifth-place points.

The Midshipmen will return to action next weekend when they travel up to Princeton, N.J., for the IC4A Championship.

Navy Routs Army In Home Finale, 19-2

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's lacrosse team held arch-rival Army scoreless for over 53 minutes and routed the Black Knights, 19-2, at a wind-swept Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The win moves Navy's record to 15-4 overall, entering this week's USL WDIA national tournament.

"It was a good performance for us and good to end the home season on a high note," said Navy head coach Cindy Timchal. "I was happy to see all three seniors (Elise Chapdelaine, Katie Neff, Stephanie Homick) score goals. Obviously, our defense played well. It's good to go into nationals with a strong performance like this."

Navy started slow, leading just 2-0 10 minutes into the contest. However, the Mids exploded for 12 goals in the final 19:45 of the first half to take a 14-0 lead after the opening 30 minutes. The Mids outshot Army, 23-3, in the first half, scooped up 27 ground balls to Army's 12 and won 11 of the 15 draw controls.

In the second half, Navy pushed the lead to 17-0 before Army finally got on the board with 6:32 to play, the first of two straight Army tallies to cut the lead to 17-2. Navy, however, scored the final two goals of the game for the final margin.

For the contest, Navy outshot Army 34-15 and had 43 ground balls to Army's 19. The Mids won 17 draw controls to Army's six and forced 23 Army turnovers.

Freshman Erin Rawlick surpassed the 100-point mark for the season with her third 10-point effort of the weekend. She led the Mids with five goals and five assists. Classmate Mary Ruttum added eight points (5 g, 3 a). Amanda Towey dished out six assists and Chapdelaine scored three goals. Five other players scored goals for the Mids.

In goal, Natalie Blandon saw the majority of time, registering three saves. Vanessa Nieves added three saves and Ellyn Creasey stopped one shot.

Navy will be the second seed in this week's USL WDIA national tournament. Navy will battle 15th-seeded Oregon on Wednesday at 10:00 am (MST) in Denver, Colo.

Navy Sets School Record for Wins, Defeats UMES, 10-4

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy baseball junior outfielder Mitch Harris (Mt. Holly, N.C.) went 3-for-3 with a double and a triple to lead the Midshipmen past Maryland-Eastern Shore, 10-4, in their regular season finale on Sunday afternoon at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium. With the win, the Midshipmen improved to 35-19 on the year, establishing a program record for victories in a season, breaking the previous mark of 34 set by the 1995 ballclub. The Hawks dropped to 9-40 with the loss.

“As a program, you are constantly looking to create benchmarks. Breaking the school record for wins with 35 in a season, that is certainly one to build from,” stated Navy head coach Paul Kostacopoulos. “With this year’s performance so far, you hope that the future teams will look to this mark and create another level success.”

After a scoreless first inning, Navy’s offense exploded for four runs in the second and six runs in the third, collecting 10 hits in the process.

The Midshipmen produced back-to-back-to-back singles to lead off the second before freshman Steven Soares (Coral Springs, Fla.) delivered a RBI-groundout. The next batter, senior B.J. Bickel (Benson, N.C.) smacked a two-run single to left and would later come home on senior Michael Garcia’s (Kailua, Hawai’i) sacrifice fly to right.

One inning later, Harris led off with a triple to right and scored on a groundout during the next at bat. The Midshipmen would do their damage with two outs, scoring five runs. Garcia drove in a run with a bases loaded hit by pitch, followed by freshman Kendall Bolt’s (Stockton, Calif.) three-run double down the left field line. Bolt would cross the plate on Harris’ second extra-base hit of the inning, a double down the left field line.

Meanwhile, Navy freshman starting pitcher Oliver Drake (Gardner, Mass.) held the Hawks hitless over the first five innings. Maryland-Eastern Shore would tally its first and only hit off Drake in the sixth, but took advantage of Navy fielding miscues to plate four unearned runs. However, Navy’s bullpen of freshman Alec Thomas (Kernersville, N.C.), senior James Lee (Asheville, N.C.) and freshman JD Melton (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) held the visitors scoreless over the final four innings of work.

Drake would pick up the win to improve to 3-3 on the campaign, as he struck out five in five-plus innings of work. Navy’s pitching staff did not allow an earned run over the entire weekend against Maryland-Eastern Shore, a total of 23.0 innings.

“Oliver really got back on track for us today after a rough outing last weekend,” said Kostacopoulos. “He pitched really well and the offense got it going early on. After a long week of exams, these were three pretty well-played games for us this weekend.”

In addition to Harris at the plate, Bickel went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman Michael Speciale also collected two hits and crossed the plate twice on Sunday, as the Midshipmen out-hit the Hawks, 13-5.

Navy will return to action next Saturday, May 12, at Lafayette’s Class of 1978 Stadium for the 2007 Patriot League Tournament. The third-seeded Midshipmen will take on second-seeded Army in an elimination game, with the winner to take on top-seed Lafayette in a best-of-three series on Saturday and Sunday.

Seventh-Ranked Navy Shipped to Chapel Hill for NCAA Lacrosse Tournament

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The seventh-ranked Navy men's lacrosse team (11-3) will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. to face eighth-seeded North Carolina (9-5) next Saturday in the opening round of the 2007 Div. I NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament. Game time has been set for 5:00 pm at the Tar Heels' Fetzer Field and will be televised live by ESPNU. Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens.

"I told the team before we came here tonight, that anything could happen and don't be surprised if we play North Carolina," said Navy head coach Richie Meade who gathered with his players at The Greene Turtle to watch the selection show Sunday evening. "You earn the opportunity to play at home by winning the big games and I think had we been able to win one of those three one-goal games, we may have gotten that opportunity. That said, there are no easy games in the tournament whether you are playing at home or not.

"We handle going on the road well, so that's not a real concern for me," added Meade, who is a 1976 graduate of North Carolina. "We've played at Carolina for several years now, so we know the area, the hotels, the restaurants, the field."

Navy, who earned the automatic berth into this year's postseason tournament by winning its fourth-consecutive Patriot League Tournament crown, will make its fourth-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The last time Navy strung together four-consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament was in 1986-87-88-89 with the Mids winning first-round match-ups in all four tournaments.

The Midshipmen, who will make their 24th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, own a 15-23 record in postseason play. While Navy has never won an NCAA lacrosse championship, it does have 17 USILA National Championships to its credit (the NCAA Championship began in 1971). The Midshipmen are 5-5 in opening-round games and 2-1 since the field expanded to the 16-team format in 2003. Navy is 0-2 in championship games, losing to Maryland, 20-13, in 1975, and to Syracuse, 14-13, in 2004.

North Carolina, who makes its 22nd over all appearance in the NCAA Tournament and first since 2004, enters next weekend's matchup against the Midshipmen with a 9-5 record. However, the Tar Heels were winless in ACC action, dropping decisions to Duke (9-7), Maryland (14-8) and Virginia (10-9 OT). North Carolina wins over NCAA Tournament qualifiers Notre Dame (11-8) and Johns Hopkins (13-10).

Navy dismantled the Tar Heels in the March 2 matchup in Annapolis where 17 different Midshipmen produced a goal or an assist to lead Navy to a 19-8 victory over North Carolina. It was the most goals scored by Navy against a nationally-ranked team since handing 18th-ranked Army a 19-9 setback on April 7, 1990.

"I'm sure that North Carolina has some motivation to win this game because they didn't play well against us earlier this season. What impresses me about North Carolina is the fact that they overcame it. They regrouped and came back to have a good season and in turn host a first-round tournament game."

The Mids now hold a narrow 11-10 series advantage over North Carolina, winning five in a row. UNC, however, owns a 7-3 edge in games played in Chapel Hill, though Navy has won the last two, including an 11-3 victory in '06.

Though Navy and North Carolina have battled one another in the NCAA Tournament on four previous occasions, the last time was 25 years ago when the Tar Heels raced past the Mids, 16-2, in Chapel Hill on May 19 in the quarterfinals (eight-team tournament). The Tar Heels own a 3-1 series mark against Navy in the NCAA Tournament, beating the Mids in 1980, '81 and '82, while Navy captured a 13-9 victory over North Carolina in 1976.

The winner of the Navy-North Carolina game will play the winner of the Duke-Providence contest in one of the two quarterfinal games played at Navy-Marine Corp Memorial Stadium on May 20.

The 16-team field includes seven conference champions with automatic qualification - American East Conference (Albany), Colonial Athletic Association (Delaware), Eastern College Athletic Conference (Georgetown), Great Western Lacrosse League (Notre Dame), Ivy League (Cornell), Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (Providence) and Patriot League (Navy) - with the rest of the field selected at large. Johns Hopkins is the only team to have made the championship bracket every year except 1971.

The 2007 NCAA semifinals and National Championship is set for May 26 and 28 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md.

Unseeded UMBC, Towson, Loyola, Navy join Hopkins, Maryland in men's lacrosse field

Published in the BS:

On a night with some interesting twists, the NCAA invited six schools from Maryland to its 16-team Division I men's lacrosse tournament for the first time in the 37-year history of the event.

It treated Johns Hopkins with a little extra kindness for its late-season surge, made Towson one of the last entries by the slimmest of margins, brought Loyola on board for the first time in six years, and dropped Cornell, the nation's only unbeaten team, to an unexpected seeding position....

All Four Area Teams Receive Bids (Washington Times)

The general thinking in the final week of the college lacrosse regular season was the work of the NCAA tournament selection committee could prove to be downright predictable.

Turns out conventional wisdom was wrong.

Unbeaten Cornell tumbled to the No. 4 seed by virtue of its weak schedule, a stunning twist for a team that spent half the season atop the national rankings....

No.1 Duke vs. Providence
In late March the Blue Devils lost to Cornell 7-6 at home - their second loss in three games. But after adjusting to coach John Danowski’s more open offense, Duke dominated the rest of the way. A 13-2 season with wins over Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, UNC (twice) and Virginia (twice) vaulted them to the No. 1 seed. The Friars were awful the first half of the season, losing nine straight games (though, to be fair, four were one-goal loses). They found their game in the second half, winning seven of their last eight, including two upset wins over regular season MAAC champ Siena. A conference AQ trumps Providence’s 7-10 record....

Coach Richie Meade should have no problem motivating the Navy lacrosse team for its first-round game in the NCAA Tournament.

Meade can simply play the lack of respect card since the selection committee is sending the Midshipmen on the road to face a team it absolutely destroyed during the regular season....

Harris Named Patriot League Pitcher of the Week

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Following his complete game one-hitter against Maryland-Eastern Shore on Saturday, Navy baseball junior right-hander Mitch Harris (Mt. Holly, N.C.) has been selected Patriot League Pitcher of the Week, it was released by the league office on Monday afternoon.

This marks the third time this season that Harris has earned Patriot League Pitcher-of-the-Week honors, the most for any pitcher in the league.

In the nightcap of Navy’s Saturday doubleheader against Maryland-Eastern Shore in Annapolis, Harris posted his complete game shutout of the year. Only one ball that was put into play left the field during the entire game, a leadoff single through the right side in the fifth inning. The Navy right-hander used 99 pitches, 68 of which were strikes, to match his career high in strikeouts with 12.

His 12-strikeout performance on Saturday pushed his season total to 114, which established a Patriot League record and moved him into second place on the program’s all-time list. His effort on Saturday also increased his career strikeout total to 249, which puts him in second place on both the Patriot League and Navy lists.

For the year, Harris owns an 8-4 record with a 2.30 ERA in 82.1 innings. He has held the opposition to a .175 batting average and has struck out 12.46 batters per nine innings, currently the highest mark in school history.

The Midshipmen (35-19) will take on Army (23-21-1) in the Patriot League Tournament elimination game on Saturday at 12 noon in Lafayette’s Class of 1978 Stadium. The winner of Saturday’s league tournament opener will advance to a best-of-three series against the host Leopards on Saturday and Sunday. The winner of the Patriot League Tournament earns an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament, which is scheduled to begin on June 1.

Five Mids Selected to All-League Teams

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Navy baseball infielders Michael Garcia (Sr./Kailua, Hawai’i) and Thomas Hamilton (Jr./Houston, Texas) each earned First-Team All-Patriot League honors to highlight a group of five Midshipmen selected to all-league teams, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.

Navy’s five all-league members are the most since the 2003 season, when the Midshipmen combined for seven players on the First- and Second-Team All-Patriot League lists.

Garcia was named a first-team selected at second base, while Hamilton earned first-team all-league kudos at first base. Mitch Harris (Jr./Mt. Holly, N.C.) was selected Second-Team All-Patriot League as both a starting pitcher and a designated hitter, JD Melton (Fr./Myrtle Beach, S.C.) earned second-team all-league recognition as a relief pitcher and Drew Lydon (Fr./White Plains, Md.) was honored as a second-team selection at third base.

In Patriot League contests this season, Garcia led the league with a .414 (29-for-70) batting average and a whopping .539 (48-for-89) on-base percentage. The Navy senior team captain scored 22 runs, drove in 14, stole six bases and belted two doubles and a home run.

Garcia paces the Midshipmen with a .350 (62-for-177) batting average on the year and also tops the team in on-base percentage (.445), hits (62), walks (24) and sacrifice bunts (five). Garcia’s 62 base hits heading into the weekend are tied for the ninth-most in program history. Between March 25 and April 16, he strung together a team-best 14-game hitting streak, a period in which he batted .453 (24-for-53) with 21 runs scored and 11 RBIs.

Ranking second in batting average during Patriot League contests was Hamilton, who hit at a .408 (29-for-71) clip during his 20 starts in league action. Hamilton smacked five doubles and drove in 20 runs, while reaching base safely more than 45 percent of the time. He also cleanly fielded 173 of his 174 chances at first base during the league slate, good for a .994 fielding percentage.

After getting off to a slow start in the season, Hamilton has turned it on over the past seven weeks, hitting .408 (40-for-98) with seven doubles, a triple, a home run and 25 RBIs. Overall on the year, he owns a .336 (49-for-146) batting average with nine doubles, a triple, a home run, 30 RBIs and a .429 on-base percentage. The Navy junior also had a 12-game hitting streak between April 19 and May 5, the second longest stretch by a Navy hitter in 2007.

Harris became the first player in program history and the seventh player in league history to earn All-Patriot League honors at two different positions. Harris, last year’s Patriot League Pitcher of the Year, owns an 8-4 record with a 2.30 ERA in 82.1 innings, including a Patriot League-record 114 strikeouts. He has averaged 12.46 strikeouts per nine innings this season, which currently stands as both the school and league record. The Navy right-hander has struck out more batters than innings pitched during all of his 13 starts in 2007.

At the plate, Harris leads the Patriot League in home runs (eight) and RBIs (47), while also tied for the league lead in triples (four). His eight round-trippers this season also ranks him third on the program’s single-season list, only behind Mark Zematis’ 10 long balls in 2000 and Marcus Lee’s 12 four-baggers in 1993. Against Holy Cross on March 31-April 1, Harris became only the second player in school history and the first Navy hitter in Patriot League play to hit a home run in back-to-back-to-back games.

After earning Freshman All-America honors last season at Wofford, Melton earned second-team all-league distinction this season with a 3-2 record and nine saves with a 2.45 ERA in 19 appearances. His nine saves and 19 appearances are the most by Navy freshman, while his saves total is just one short of matching the school record and two away from tying the Patriot League single-season mark and Navy’s career record. The Navy right-hander did not allow a run over 16.0-consecutive innings between Feb. 23 and April 9, a span of nine relief appearances.

Lydon is the only rookie in the league to earn All-Patriot League honors at any position this year, as he hit .314 (44-for-140) and guarded the hot corner for much of the latter half of 2007. During Patriot League contests, the Navy freshman batted .347 (26-for-75) with four doubles and 10 runs scored. He boasted the longest hitting streak by a Navy freshman this season, as he recorded a base knock in eight-straight contests between March 31 and April 11. Lydon also flashed the leather, taking away many hits with spectacular diving catches.

The Midshipmen (35-19), ranked third in this year’s Patriot League Tournament, will take on second-seeded Army (23-21-1) in an elimination game on Saturday at 12 noon at Lafayette’s Class of 1978 Stadium. The winner of that game will advance to take on the top-seeded Leopards (30-17) in a best-of-three championship series on Saturday and Sunday. The winner of the Patriot League Tournament earns an automatic spot in the NCAA Tournament, which begins on June 1.
