Hello all. Does the USMA require their athletes to be registered with the NCAA clearinghouse out of HS like other colleges do? I appreciate insight from any who have been through it. Thanks so much!

Very interesting question... My short answer is 'yes.' Some people will argue that there is no such thing as an athletic scholarship at a SA, which is true. But all the SAs have the NCAA eligibility link attached to their compliance webpages for a reason. My answer is 'yes' for a reason that has nothing to do with the debate I am sure I am starting. You need to think beyond service academies. My son was recruited by USMA and USNA for his sport. He was also recruited by several civilian schools, and they definitely required NCAA registration for any scholarship offers. My point is, if you are good enough to be a varsity athlete at USMA, you are also good enough to be a varsity athlete at civilian D1 schools, so why not just get certified anyway to cover all your bases?

Can confirm that varsity athletes are required to register with NCAA clearinghouse. It’s a NCAA rule to compete, not the SA (or other colleges).

The point of the NCAA clearinghouse is to make sure varsity athletes have met certain criteria (academic, not pro’s or endorsed athletes, etc).

I always thought so, but I've read and heard different answers about it. A plebe may have been a standout football and baseball player at HS, but not be recruited for those sports. Then he comes to plebe summer and and blows everybody away in a sprinting event. Now the track coach wants him on the team. Does he need to then be registered? The coach and athletic dept would know. What about a kid who wrestled at the d3 level for 2 years? D3 does not require NCAA clearinghouse registration. On the NCAA website, it says that a d3 student transferring into a d1 or d2 program needs to look at that school's eligibility requirements. It does not say that a transfer student from a d3 school needs to be registered. There are so many grey areas. My son is registered anyway, because he needed to be for the official visits he too at the civilian schools.

I'm sure this is why every D1 athletic program has a compliance specialist. In the end, if you have any desire or chance to be an athlete at the D1 or D2 level, get registered and have all your bases covered.

To be clear, I agree with you all. But the original question was does the athlete need to be registered out of High School. I am sure there are many plebes who were not registered out of HS that ended up being varsity athletes at a SA. And I'm sure the compliance depts made sure they were registered if they needed to be.

Good points. I know of one plebe in DS’s (USNA) class, not a recruited athlete or anything out of high school so maybe wouldn’t be registered. During PS, made a varsity team.

What I do know is that Coaches are all over compliance. DS (who was registered Bc a recruited athlete) had questions we looked into during his first weeks of his sport, that were generated from his Coach.

There is little that the SA’s aren’t aware of. Little they haven’t seen before. Dare I say anything?
