I currently run track at a D3 school, where I do NROTC as well. I am considering reapplying to the USNA, but I am not sure if that would mean the end of my running career. Would I be able to run? Or would it not work out because I would only be able to run 3 years

If you are competitive with your times with current athletes, why not?

Have you looked up the times in your events to see how you compare?
 
If you are good enough to run, then the coaches would take you. The track website has target times for recruitment, take a look and see see where you stand. You would have to red shirt a year, but honestly would make plebe year easier that way. Good luck.
 
No clue how all that works with the eligibility center, but reaching out to the coach would get you the best info.

There are tons of ways to run. Whether varsity, club, intramural, or just for fun. Personally, wouldn’t let that be the determining factor in applying or not. You may even find you are fulfilled without a running career. Both of my guys were track and field, and got interested in other things. Like sailing. There are so many opportunities to try something new. Parachuting, rowing, SCUBA, ultimate frisbee….the list goes on.
 
I think you would still lose one of your 4 years, but thats rather moot in this case since you wouldnt be staying for a 5th. Assuming rules havent changed with all the ncaa chaos lately, You would sit out freshman year and have 3 years left.

Gotcha. This was what I was getting at, I wasn't sure if you'd miss out on one of the years. Thanks
 
Yes if you have one year of competition in college already you would have 3 left at the USNA.

But three years or four it should not mean the end of your running career.

It could mean one year of invitational (non college) events you train for and compete in.

or it could mean a year of a different sport at the club or intramural level.

Going from D3 without scholarships to D1, assuming Navy didnt recruit the runner, then it appears no longer has a 1 year sit rule. It seems any of the 3 would work. And in XC, running unattached should be doable.

The ncaa changes these every year of late, all to soften restrictions in favor of the athletes.
 
COVID has changed all kinds of NCAA eligibility rules, including "sit years," total years, "grad" years and transfer regs. Talk to the NCAA eligibility staff in Indiana and the NCAA Compliance staff at USNA.

Don't leave this up to conjecture on a message board.
 
As pointed out above, don’t leave this to conjecture and the web. Check. COVID may have changed things.
At a minimum, if you make the team, you can redshirt a year.
Be aware, there is a difference between DIII and DI. Anyone saying otherwise is fooling themselves. But… times are times. I’m sure you can see what are qualifying times for USNA. If you can run that fast you can make the team.
