Need advice from sane USNA parents

This situation is nothing new at any academy. In fact, it’s about as old as time! Quite a few officer families on post at West Point have cadet girlfriends join them as live-in nannies. GF’s transfer to UC – Colorado Springs from their own colleges all the time because they are suddenly so in love with a guy in a blue uniform that they can’t stand to be miles away from him. And there are a number of houses right outside Gate 1 of USNA that cater to mid GF’s. Or just cater to mids in general, if you know what I’m saying. (After all, it is a navy base!)

I agree, as none of us are involved in this particular situation, we don’t have a place to comment. They are adults and if they can swing it financially on their own, no one can really stop them. It could end with wedding bells, and who are we to say that it won’t?

As to the statement of “If she gets pregnant he's out of USNA!” – I am still not done laughing at that one. Do you know how many cadets/mids have fathered children while they were cadets/mids, and stayed and graduated? If they do not place their name on the birth certificate as the father, then the child is not their legal dependent, thus keeping in line with the regs. The birth cert can then be amended once they graduate, if the couple stays together to raise the child. Is this against the honor code? Yeah, pretty much, but this is what happens in reality people. Friends and family just keep it real quiet. I’ve seen it with my own two eyes. More than once.

Humorous, related story: A relative of mine used to work in the personnel office at one of the academies. One day about a week before graduation a cadet/mid who was about to graduate comes into the office with a young woman and a baby. He informs the clerk that he wants to get dependent ID cards for his wife and baby. The clerk, rather astounded by the request, informs the cadet/mid that no, in fact, he does not want to do that. The cadet/mid stated that without the card, his wife cannot shop at the PX/BX or commissary. The clerk says she knows that, but it would probably be best if they waited until they got to their first assignment to obtain ID cards. With that, the happy little family walked out of the office. [The best and the brightest? Well... not always.] [People, I couldn’t make this stuff up if I tried!]

When you’ve been around long enough, you’ve seen it all, and you know all the dirty little secrets.
