need advice NOW (going to jail?)

I have not officially separated from the Frat yet. I do plan on, but I am still in contact with my pledge trainer as he has been texting us non-stop for the past 3 days. He wants us to NOT press any charges as apparently it would be beneficial to everyone. He says that if i dont press charges, then no one needs to know about the underage drinking and torture routines they put us through. The only thing on paper would be the pledges were caught high... in california. Our university literally deals with 100s of high kids getting caught every year and could not care less about it. They said they will do nothing about my student status as long as they think I was only high for a night.

But after going through this thread I think I will raise awareness about the WHOLE situation. I think it is my only hope of possibly staying in the military.
That is definitely your pledge trainer trying to twist you into thinking you shouldn't press charges... for gods sake man they tortured you and took away your chance of serving your country??? and you wont press charges???

Having seen this exact same thing happen to fraternities before (although never this severe), the line "it's beneficial to everyone" is bullsh*t they use to cover their own butts. As pledges, you all will most likely be interviewed individually about what happened by University authorities, and you will have the chance to be honest. The responsibility and blame will be placed on the actives, NOT the pledges. If you do come forward to authorities, then don't tell anybody besides family you did so and try and keep it as anonymous as possible. If ROTC kicks you out or suspends your scholarship, don't tell anyone in the fraternity. You don't want to open yourself to retaliation of any kind.

As for the University dealing with 100s of kids getting high, that's true but you're not like other kids. As an example, for most kids an underage drinking ticket is a funny story and maybe a few hundred bucks. For a cadet or midshipman, it's probably gonna be a career ender.

I know this is hard and I'm really sorry what should have been a fun college experience ended like this. I was a pledge once too. I had to deal with hazing and the pledging process as well, but if what you are saying is true, this crosses the line into criminal behavior. These guys are not your "brothers." They're people with serious issues taking advantage of your willingness to deal with abuse for a chance to be a part of their organization.

If this weren't so typical of so many fraternities, I'd say this is the same poster who shows up occasionally pretending to be a complete idiot with some stemwinder story that gets posters' underwear in a wad.

If you aren't pretending to be an idiot, follow Jcleppe's advice:

Tell Your Cadre
Hire an attorney
Leave the Fraternity*
Talk this over with your parents
Find out how this will effect your status with the university

*This would top my list

If you are somehow able to skate through this without a serious penalty or humiliation then you will become danger to society. If you're allowed to become an officer, then my son chose the wrong organization to join.

Your last post illustrates the difference between malicious ignorance (your "trainer") and unconscious ignorance (you). Both equally dangerous to those associated with it.

One question for OP...

If you had not been caught by the police, would you still be putting up with all the crap the frat was doing to you?

If the answer is yes, you have no sympathy from me.

If the answer is no, why the heck did you keep doing these insane things?

I have more sympathy and empathy for Bobby who was trying to rise above a bad situation from which he came and in which he had little choice or options.

This is your test as to leadership, character, and integrity - will you tell him to F off and stop calling you, and do the right thing and be honest about this to the authorities; or, be a sheep and and say "yeah, no problem - when's the next crop of pledges to haze?"

Google the frat at Penn State where a kid died recently - the frat kept doing this hazing because no-one would speak up. What if you say nothing and next year a kid is killed? Seriously, here are a few links:

And of course this frat kid is going to tell you not to worry, the university deals with 100s of high kids... WTH do think he's going to tell you? He had no problem impairing your PT test and getting you high while knowing you were ROTC - you think he really cares about your interests and would tell you the truth?

I hope you do stand up and raise awareness.

I think, quite frankly, that while you're still anonymous here, it would help to rein in this out of control fraternity by throwing it under the proverbial bus. Sunlight is the best disinfectant. I don't necessarily see anything wrong with tossing their name out here as a cautionary tale for anyone else that may be considering joining them.

The things they're doing aren't hazing, they're sadistic. They're jeopardizing the health of their pledges. Nothing wrong suspending their charter on campus.

My DS (NROTC, rising Jr) joined a fraternity this year, which had been banned on campus for over a decade. (It sounds as though they must have had a reputation similar to the one mentioned in the OP, and the school shut them down.)

The new membership is made up of members of the different ROTC units, and all they've done is community service work around the town where they're going to school. No hazing, just a group of guys that get together and do good things around the community.

If this weren't so typical of so many fraternities,

Reading these stories, I am thankful every day for the school my sons chose to attend. Both were in the same Fraternity and had an excellent experience, younger son was President of the school's IFC. Sadly the same can't be said for every Greek System and that's a shame.

Again, if what you're saying is the truth and you have any amount of character you should press any charge possible and bring to light what goes on behind the curtain with this Fraternity. What they are doing is criminal and those doing it deserve whatever punishment they might receive.

I'm curious, your first post back in 2016, you stated that you had received a 4 year AROTC Scholarship to UT Austin, no mention of a AFROTC Scholarship and no other post until now. I guess plans changed?

While waiting for DW to beautify herself (she doesn't understand you can't improve on perfection) before going to Morroccan Night, I have to ask what is this UT vs. "California Dream School" inconsistency?

I certainly hope your DW reads over your shoulder.

OP stated he was awarded an Army scholarship in 2016. Now this thread states that he has finished his frosh AS100 year at a CA school. As jcleppe said, plans can change.

This is simply just a great quote!

I can't take credit for it.

I must say, there is something comforting in knowing that my kid is going to school with armed guards at each gate, and now that pillow fights have been banned the craziest thing he could do is swim accross the Hudson River.

thank you again to everyone who has posted, I have some serious thinking to do and ask for no more replies. Mods, once again please honor my wish to delete this thread... I know you have been monitoring it.

By now you should realize that threads are not just deleted, they are sometimes locked if they get out of hand, that has not happened here. Nobody knows your name or where you attend school, this thread will soon fade down the list.
