Semper Fi. My son has a young friend that has enlisted and will be leaving for our glorious Island on Monday at 3PM. This young man is extremely intelligent, and would love to someday attend the USNA. When I was at PI in 1979, I was pulled out of my platoon and told the XO wanted to see me and a few others in our series. We were told that we had scored very high on the ASVAB and would have the opportunity to go to NAPS and eventually USNA. At 19 I did not want the 10 year comittment so I said thanks, but no thanks. I regret that decision to this day.
Does the Marine Corps still have that type of program? If not what will this young man's opportunities to attend USNA and how long will it be before he will have them. What is the protocol for a chance at USNA. Does he get the ball rolling when he is in the fleet?

There are active duty Marines from the Fleet in every class at USNA....so yes, it does happen.

I had a similar brush with the Academy...but I got out in '80 at the end of my initial enlistment and went to a civilian school.

I don't really regret the move, but I do wonder sometimes......
