Hello everyone. Currently I am a sophomore in high school. I am from Virginia and am deticated to getting into Air Force Acadamy. Although I take part in many extra curriculars suchs as sports (football, basketball, lacrosse), and community service events, I would still like to know best on how to get into the Acadamy. My questions are listed below.

-What are my best chances of getting into AFA (in terms of what grade should I shoot for, what do I need to do to qualify for a scholarship, extra curriculars, ect.)
-When should I start the proccess of getting an appointment from a high level politic?
-Are there any politicans you belive I should start when beginning my search for an appointment

There may be more questions but this is all I can think of for now. Thank you for taking your time to read this and answer the questions.

If you have not done so already, you may want to review the USAFA class of 2014 profile

This will give you an idea of the qualifications of the previous class. Hopefully the class of 2015 profile will be published soon.

Concerning the timing of starting the nomination process, I asked that question of a parent of a cadet who just finished his first year at USAFA and they said to start the process at the end of the Junior year. I am curious as to what others think.

Hope this helps...

I wanted to start my nomination process in late Junior Year, but my rep doesn't open hers until July , so unfortunately I have to wait. In response to your question, apply for the Summer Seminar this year coming up, keep your grades up, and stay involved.

As for the Nomination process, each Congressman/Senator will have their separate deadlines - look it up on their websites. Keep in mind that it's not a sprint - getting your nomination application package in before anyone else at the expense of your test scores, grades or extracurricular activities is pointless and will come back to bite you since the Nomination Committee will not be making accept/reject decision until the deadline has passed and have the whole picture in terms of applicants. With the anticipated further reduction in class size for the Class of 2016 you want to make sure that you're the cream of the crop. As such, make sure you've got the best package possible (ie. taken/received the highest SAT/ACT scores possible, kept up your GPA + Class Rank, try out another EC activity). Unless you're ABSOLUTELY sure there's no possible room for improvement, I would personally suggest delay sending off your package till August/September.

One more thing: a lot of people make the fatal mistake of applying for a nomination just from their Congressman.

If you're serious about getting into the Academy, apply to ALL sources of nominations which you qualify for. For non-military affiliated people this includes 1) your member of Congress, 2) your two Senators of your State and 3) the Vice-President (too many people don't know/bother with the VP nomination - it can mean the difference between an appointment and the dreaded TWE!!) If your family member is in the military, instead of the VP nomination you'll qualify for the Presidential nomination.

alright thanks everyone. For the nomination, who do I have to have appoint me to be in the Acadamy? My grandfather is retired from the military but im am still confused on how this works. Thank you

I think you're getting confused between the difference of being "nominated" and being "appointed".

The nomination is an essential key to qualify for an appointment to the Academy; its simply a portion of your entire application. Without a nomination you CANNOT receive an appointment. Think of the appointment like an acceptance letter to a civilian college.

As far as I understand, your immediate family member (ie. your father or mother) will have to have served for eight continuous years of active service or credited with eight years of reserve duty service to qualify for the Presidential Nomination. As this isn't the case you qualify to seek nomination from your Congressional Representative, your two Senators and the Vice-President, not the President.

(fleiger83, Christcorp - can you confirm this?)

That's correct - it's your PARENT, not your grandparent's service that counts in this regard.

There is a ton of information on this site and on the Academy's... take a good long look, take notes, involve your parents, see your GC at your school...

Welcome to the process.

alright thanks for all the information guys. last question, what are you supposed to do for nomination? Am I supposed to send a handwritten letter or email, what do I need to write about, things like that. thanks again everyone

Go to your Representative and Senator's websites and look for a link to their requirements for Military Academy nominations. Often they are under "Constituent Services" or something similar. There will be instructions on how to apply, or how to request an application package.
