my name is Shane D. Cox. i am a high school senior and i am a prospective candidate for USAFA, USNA, and USMA for class of 2013. i got a letter about an hour ago stating that i have been disqualified for the medical examination from DODMERB. it said that an episode of sleepwalking and lower extremity issues were the culprits. however, i only had ONE instance of sleepwalking, and it occurred 3 years ago when i just turned 15. i was at a CAP wing conference and i got little to no sleep on the friday night, stayed up and decided to have some soda (POOR DECISION). i went through the activities on Saturday, and then saturday night when i went to sleep was when this occured. it had only happened that one time, and NOTHING EVER SINCE. also, i had somewhat flat feet 2.5 years ago when i first ran cross country. i developed a stress fracture from running too much mileage, and received orthotics to compensate. since then, my feet have adjusted to an arch, and i have NOT had a problem since. in fact, when DODMERB asked for medical records, i sent them ALL in and still they believe i am hindered, even though i have been running an average of 5-7 miles a day with no problems. at this point, i am wondering if i should get another doctor's advice and send in more medical records as well as the medical waiver request to all three academies. i would appreciate anyone's help in this, i desperately need it. thank you.

I will reply to you tomorrow either by phone or email:thumb:

same problem

I have the same situation as the previous writer. I too am diagnosed with flat feet with a history of inserts. I suffer no injury or discomfort from the condition and am exteremely active in running and sports. I seek an appointment to the USMA or an ROTC scholarship and am confused on how to proceed. Any advice you can supply would be highly appreciated.

I have the same issue. The doctor really didn't even look at my feet that much. He just asked if there was ever any discomfort, and I said no. Now I'm qualified.

The current Department of Defense standard that applies here is: "Current symptomatic pes planus {flat feet}, congenital {at birth} or history of pes planus corrected by prescription or custom orthotics is disqualifying."

Translated = If you have a diagnosis of flat feet AND there is a demonstration of any symptoms.... pain, affecting function, etc., you would be determined by DoDMERB to NOT meet medical accession standards. :thumb:

flat feet standard

Per recommnedation from ellow army comrades, please state the governing reg that stipulates Pes Palnus as a DQ condition.

Mr, Mullen - my son just a DQ letter for “Rigid or symptomatic pes planus”. My son does have flat feet but has never affected his performance. Is there a way to contest that diagnosis?

Welcome, new member of just about a day. While you are awaiting Mr. Mullen’s return to the thread, if your son hasn’t gone to the DoDMERB site and read everything on the left-hand side, I recommend it. There is also material addressed to parents.

DoDMERB either finds the candidates to meet or not meet standards. The commissioning source decides whether or not to pursue a waiver from the waiver authority.

If you find a thread this old, it’s usually best to not wake the zombies and feel free to start a new thread.
