Wait until your kid comes home and is using some. They may also use some words that you hadn't heard from their mouth before. When I picked up DD from STEM she informed me that now she gets that saying "talks like a sailor".

HAH! My Marine son always talks to me in acronyms that have no meaning. I either take a guess or ask him to tell me. Sometimes he doesn't even know.

If he comes back interested in applying to the Naval Academy, make sure he applies to NROTC as a backup plan.

Leadership and citizenship programs put on by American Legion in your state. Juniors qualify or are chosen in high schools across the country to attend during the summer prior to their senior year. Important and looked at on WPS for application to SA.

High school teachers pick the students for attending in our area.

Some American Legions may be able find slots for boys. Our HS... no one was interested and our guidance counselors had no clue. DS had to contact our AL personally. This year the guidance counselor came to us gor advice! He ️ed the experience.

Anyone who is thinking about Boy's State for a current Junior is getting close to being out of time. I am the County Coordinator for Boy's State for the Legion and a member of the staff when we conduct our Boys State program in June. Many posts have already conducted their interviews and I've already conducted our county interviews for a high school with no local legion post and am conducting our local post's interviews this week.
But even if your local high school's Boy's State choices have already been made, all might not be lost as in some cases, parents might be able to "sponsor" their boy. Check the website for your state's Boy's State to see if they allow/offer this.

+1 to OldRetSWO. We sponsored our son. It was fun, a great experience, and he got to speak at the local Legion meeting as a result. Thanks to an old vet, the first words out of his mouth as he spoke to the group was "When I first found out about Boys and Girls State, I was really, really, interested in going to Girls State!". Got a big laugh from the crowd.

I believe that Illinois (and possibly other states) will accept anyone who applies as long as you pay for it. It is worth it any way you can swing it. DS loved it (though going in he wasn’t sure he would) and thought it was a really valuable experience.
