New Retirement Plan

I have heard that there is a new retirement plan going into effect on 1 January 2018. How will this affect those of us who will be going to the Service Academies this year (Class of 2021)?

If you join prior to that date, you can opt in to the new system, or keep the old one.

You will also get briefs at your SA. You'll have the choice.

For SA's, in a nutshell:
If your Service Academy date of entry (DIEMS) is AFTER January 1, 2018, you will be automatically enrolled in the new Blended Retirement System (BRS)

If BEFORE January 1, 2018, but AFTER January 1, 2006, you will have the CHOICE of enrolling in BRS, OR remain in the old system.

If BEFORE January 1, 2006, you are "grandfathered" into the old system.
