New Student Indoctrination (Summer 2019)

Son just got back from NSI 2. I think it was a useful experience for him - but in an unexpected way. Apparently, he had been having some doubts for a while. Well, he cam back from NSI convinced that he was absolutely not a good fit for the Marine Corps.

I have been helping with this process for a long time - so - at least at first - this pending change of plans hit me like a ton of bricks. But, I am coming to terms with it. It is his life and I would hate to see him channeled down a path that would make him miserable. Luckily, we can afford to send him to his college even without the scholarship.

I do wonder if NSI will have the impact of increasing early attrition out of NROTC? Maybe that is the point?

I dont know if it is meant to increase attrition, but it is certainly meant to speed it up. id say you will know if military life is or is not for you within those 3 weeks versus waiting an entire college year. Kudos to your son (and you) for learning this about himself early and for being mature enough to change lanes. sounds like he is on a great path already

I just went through NSI Cycle 2 and I have to say it was an AWESOME experience. The beginning absolutely sucked, for a lack of better terms, but the experience was extremely beneficial and motivating. I did not think NSI was extremely hard, except for getting IT'd all the time by our Chiefs and Marine Instructors, but it was a challenge needless to say. I enjoyed learning about the opportunities for both Navy and Marine options, but I am even more excited for being a Marine option now after having briefs on things like TBS, aviation, ground elements, and so on. I am excited for my future experience as an ROTC student after going through this program and am even more motivated to become a Marine Corps officer and aviator. A good chunk of people dropped and it wasn't hard to see why they would, others decided to steal things like peanut butter from chow halls and they were let go. I loved the comradery that was built in those 3+ weeks and it was awesome to ask all the questions we had to the instructors and upperclassman in charge of us. Learning from our knowledge books was a pain in the neck tho, especially with the stress involved haha.

You must have been in Bravo company with the peanut butter incident. Haha

The hats (covers) my DS was issued at NSI are too small, especially now that he has hair. Anyone know how those get swapped out for the proper size? The unit has not met yet and I'm wondering if this is something we should resolve before he reports, or if they will assist him in getting the correct covers.

just answering this for future MIDS searching the forum. the cover or any other uniform issued at NSI can be corrected or exchanged after you report to your NROTC unit. it may take a while but eventually you will get what you need in the right size :)

My son is currently on Marine scholarship at a senior military school. He's a freshman (4th class midshipman). Last summer he was told he had to attend the mandatory NSI in July 2019 before the start of his freshman year. A few weeks later the Navy decided all scholarship kids going to senior military schools did not have to attend NSI. Probably funding issues but also redundant training I'm sure. Fast forward to today.... he has now been informed that all scholarship kids who did not attend NSI last summer MUST attend this coming 2020 summer. So as a rising 3rd class midshipman he will have to attend both NSI with the new 4th class midshipman and CORTAMID with his 3rd class midshipman peers. Seems like a logistical nightmare to fit both in one summer. I'm a navy vet so I understand the often confusing decision making process in the service - but to me it seems when they opted to excuse them last summer "that ship has sailed" and doesn't make sense to revisit that decision and now send them in 2020. He's putting his best foot forward and embracing the idea but as I dad I don't get it. As far as dates for NSI... my son mentioned July 23-Aug 12 as a possibility.
